Facepunch Studios is now a proper company! I know people have a lot of questions about this. What does it mean, what will change, what will happen to the forums. The truth is, probably nothing for a while. If you’ve got any other questions about this, post in the comments and if there’s enough I’ll do an Answer post next.

I bought a new computer and a new monitor to celebrate a massive tax refund that I’m due. Nothing too flashy, just a Core i7 920 (the 940 and above didn’t really seem worth the money). I had to buy a new PSU to get my Geforce 295 in it. I’m pretty happy with it all. 60fps in the GTAIV benchmark. Can’t complain. I don’t know much about hardware anymore. I don’t understand how this Core i7 can be less ghz than my old CPU, but be nearly twice as fast.

I haven’t been doing much coding over the last few days. I’ve been erecting a fence in my sister’s garden. We only had to put 4 stumps in, but it was a right bitch. In the first one we had to chip the concrete off the base of an already existing post. In the second one there were all clothes buried there – which are harder to dig through than you might imagine. In the third there were clothes and tree roots. And then in the last one there were tree roots. So what was going to take about 4 hours ended up taking 2 days. Oh well, the weather has been awesome, so it’s been a pleasure to get out in it instead of being stuck in an office.

Clothes? Like the kind you wear? Why in the world were they all buried for? Obviously to get rid of them or whatnot, but I’ve just never heard of people burying clothes of all things.
Also, good luck with the company. Do you have to announce in in your local newspaper? Here in the states whenever somebody wants to start a company, even if it’s their own 1 person army, they have to send an announcment to the newspaper and it gets published. At least about 10 years ago that’s what my dad had to do when he started his.

chips can’t be compared generation to generation because hz for hz, the newer chips are faster. The underlying technology and materials are better than the ones before. A better benchmark might be computations per second or something.

Nice system ya got there by the sound of it. Very nifty. I was almost drooling over your new processor, should be very VERY fast especially for game that support that many cores.

Do you keep the factory installed OS and software on it, or do you wipe it and install different operating systems when you want? I belive Dell computers come with factory restore as well, did you keep this? I kept it on mine with the original software because it’s all built for the machine so everything works. I didn’t want to risk setting it all up again and having to manually find the drivers for all of my hardware and having bits missing.

The Core i7 has a memory controller RIGHT ON THE CHIP!!!

It has l3 cache, and does away with frontside bus.

It has hyperthreading, so it acts like eight cores

The Clock speed isn’t the best way to measure performance, if it takes 3 cycles to add a vector at 1GHz or 1 cycle at 0.5GHz, the slower clock speed processor would be faster, it’s clever use of hardware which is making newer processors faster as it’s gotten near impossible to increase the clock-speed in some places.

Two big things re: CPU performance…

1. The Core i7 is finally a true quad-core chip, not two dual-cores glued together. They have crazy fast interconnects.
2. Bus speed is way higher.

Yeah, performance != clock speed. I had a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 which was ridiculously slow compared to my new 2.0GHz Core 2.

Dolah, the main reasons the i7 is much faster then the core 2 chips is mostly thanks to the use of ddr3 ram and they completly removed the fsb. Also, Core i7 is a revision of the Core 2 Quad chips, rather then a totally new chip.

How much did the business license (or whatever you brits call it) set you back? Where I’m at, these highly variable depending on which city you incorporate in, its from $20 up to crazy, no limit its based on your size.

Newer processor architectures run faster at lower clock speeds because they can do more per clock. And with i7, Intel finally switched to an onboard memory controller (like AMD has had) which brings a small latency decrease and also it has a fairly decent implementation of hyper-threading.

1. Will Facepunch be renamed?
2. Is the intention profit?
3. Like one guy said, WHAT will change on the website?
4. Are you an one man army, or do you have a shiny office with 3 elite soldiers coding Garry’s Mod Extreme Edition?
5. What does it require (price, concept, etc etc) to make a company like Facepunch?
6. Off the track, will there ever be a new, improved, more stable version of Garry’s Mod (points towards the company)
7. Will there be sub domains of Facepunch? Like for something else, I don’t know.
8. How will it take effect on the Facepunch users?
9. Will there be any pay-to-use features on Facepunch?

Intel Core 2 Duo has about 410 Million transistors, which are basically the things that are in the CPU.
Intel Core i7 has over 710 million Transistors.
Transistors basically calculate everything, 410 transistors calculate something slower than a 710 transistor CPU.
