It’s 2 years today since GMod went on sale on Steam.

The day it went on Steam was a nervous day for me. How well would it sell, would it be buggy as hell, would Valve regret giving me this chance?

The popularity took me and Valve by surprise. As soon as it went on sale the steam servers were temporary knocked out, due to the demand. On the first day it sold 5,729 copies. Wowzer.

I kind of expected that it would sell a big number of copies for the first day, then sell very few after that. I was kind of wrong, because over the next 2 years it went on to sell 312,541 copies. Which has totally knocked my socks off.

GMod hasn’t just given me financial stability, It’s also made me a lot more experienced in c++. I learned how game engines are meant to work. I got to fly to Valve HQ and meet some game making dudes. I got to tell a nice bearded fellow how I was sick all over myself in the shower after eating airline food, and then realising I was talking to Warren Spector.

And it’s my hope that it has inspired other people to do stuff. I mean, I’m a fool like you, I’ve just got more experience in pretending I’m not, and I did it.. So why can’t you.

But I couldn’t have done it alone. Thanks to: All of TEAM GARRY, and all those that contributed ideas and suggestions. Thanks to all of Valve, but especially ErikJ, because none of this would have happened without him and to Alfred and Jason for putting up with my many updates.

Nauczyłem się jak działają silniki gier. Zwiedziłem siedzibę Valve.”. Jakby ktoś nie wiedział to Garry’s Mod pozwala na importowanie modeli z różnych gier i zabawę nimi w dowolny sposób.

  8. Shougunner says:

So you’ve made around 15 million dollars right?

I could of sworn one of your blogs said you were making around five digit figures.

  9. Shougunner says:

    Sorry I meant 150 million.

    Although that seems far-fetched.

  10. Shougunner says:

I got to learn 2 math.

  11. birkett says:

    300,000 copies * $10 per copy = 3 million USD.
~2 million GBP in the current climate.
    ~50% towards garry = 1 million GBP.

  12. Grey Ganado says:

According to my calculations you’re a millionaire.

  13. Garry Newman says:

According to my bank account, I’m not.

  14. Shougunner says:

I facepalmed on mental arithmetic. >.<

Anyway, what the hell have you spent your money on? Other than apartments and cars that is.

    Did you buy Gmod? :3

  15. Wickedgenius says:

  35. Ruiski says:

To the people who are trying to calculate his money:

I’m pretty sure that Valve gets half and TEAM Garry gets half, not just Garry. He’s the founder though, so I’d say it isn’t split up evenly, but I have no idea to be honest.

But if it was split up evenly, it would still be a rather large amount, ~$200,000 (over past two years)? My calculations were all done by dollars, no idea how much it costs elsewhere.

Didn’t imagine it going this far, eh?

  48. Happy birthday Garry’s Mod. Remember the wait for it to be released. Great to see the chance Valve took on you pay off and your hard work didn’t go to waste. It’s also great that you still update it.

Thanks Garry and Team Garry! :)

  54. Powerdusk says:

Congrats Garry, But $10 says that mingebags will start demanding money for “making” Garry’s Mod by suggesting stupid shit.

  55. ResidentEvil91 says:

I think it would sold many many more if only there would be CD/DVD version of it. :P

  58. Andy says:

I remember the first time I opened up Gmod. “I can feel teh excitementz!” I said, sweating with anticipation. “It’s gonna be greatz!!”

    I was greeted by… a citizen putting a cone onto Gman’s head.

    Lame.

I mean, the game was great, but… such a crappy background! And since you built it before the game was released I’m assuming you built it in Gmod 9…

  59. theJ89 says:

Congratulations. Garry’s Mod is a really great mod…

  60. abcpea says:

2 years and still not significant progress, and yet we were promised weekly/monthly updates.

  61. Panda X says:

abcpea, shut up. He promised no such thing. He might have said he’d try to. But that’s not the same. Let’s see you make your own so all of us can be an ass toward you. Please?

    Congrats Team/Garry.

  62. Smurfy says:

And there were, but not anymore. The game has moved to a whole new engine, how could Garry have possibly supported it any better?

  63. jack? says:

This is Garry’s Mods 2nd birthday and your whineing about updates? thats not the point, the point is that GMod has come so far (in gameing industry terms) for a small third party company has come this far in two years.

  64. Max says:

It seems a little egotistical but… as a long-time fan I feel like me and the other GMod players can all share in your achievement a little bit. I’ve been playing GMod since before v7 and I’ve been posting on facepunch since ‘04 and it’s been really incredible seeing the community grow as GMod evolved.

It’s pretty amazing how far you and GMod have come. I’m really looking forward to seeing where you go with Botch or Facewound or whatever it is you end up doing next.

  65. El Ammo Bandito says:

I remember coming in at about version 5.0 or something. When the item spawner was still on the wall.

Me and my brother were trying to make space ships and his kept failing in comical ways. Mine was the first to work, it involved a swing frame with giant gas canisters on either side with Dr. Breen roped to it by the arms. It spiraled perfectly into the sky!

  66. Selkcip says:

    Congratulations Garry.

  67. durka says:

Somewhere I thought I heard that you were making half of the sale price off of every GMOD sold. GMOD is $10, so that would mean you make $5 off of every one sold. That would mean that with 312,541 sold you would have made around… assuming my math is correct… $1,562,705. That’s not a bad income IMHO.

  68. Zonic/Sakuran says:

Congratulations, TEAM GARRY and Garry’s Mod. Also to you, Mr. Garry Newman. Here’s to another two years of success!

  69. Die Hard says:

2 years of gmod 10 and 4 years of gmod HAPPY BIRTHDAY,,,
I remember when it was originally going to be free but you needed money or somethin like that

  70. J23 says:

Congrats Garry on getting this far, I wish you great success with possibly the best sandbox mod…ever.

  71. DniFan says:

Die Hard: Negative. Steam suggested Garry to charge 10 dollars for it, and that would mean full source code access to Garry (+ the update stuff in steam).

  72. Roadkill says:

I just bought my copy of Garry’s Mod 10. I’ve wanted it for this long, and have held out until today.

Well done Garry, you still got my sale, despite the 2 year gap of when I was first going to get it.

Reading your blog every day, every update, every addition to Garry’s Mod 10, I’ve watched. Like an overly obsessed stalker.

Enjoy my $5, you’ve earned it.

  73. (T-D-B)Link2006 says:

    Happy Birthday Gmod :D!
Thanks Team Garry for making this great mod!

  74. Anklyne says:

    @55
Why would he have made the background in Gmod 9? It’s not like he didn’t have #10 working before he released it or didn’t have access to it :downs:

    Congrats on the success Garry.
I wonder how long Gmod will live…my guess is for as long as Valve stay with the Source engine.

  75. Tristan Pemble says:

    Glad to have helped.

  76. Canvent says:

Gotta say happy birthday to garrys mod and everything, and yeah i remember the day exactly, i came home from school turned my PC on, started Steam as usually and suddenly i say this garrys mod on steam picture and i all spazzed, 3 min after i saw my friend outside the window i told him to get in with his eyes closed and when he saw it on steam he just jumped up and down ! good job garry !

  81. BlackNecro says:

Happy birthday Garry’s Mod … but still the whole post looks like a goodbye post XD

  82. Wegnar says:

“And it’s my hope that it has inspired other people to do stuff.”
Yeah, you’ve inspired me all right. My steam profile might not show it, but I’ve put hundreds of hours into gmod. It’s given me a better understanding of engineering, physics, and how game engines work. Thanks to you, I got off my arse and went to college. Whenever I doubt if this industry is a good career choice, I just think of gmod.

  83. Andy says:

Can’t believe it’s been 2 years already, was a great fun and it’s always inspiring to read what you’re doing with your new engine.

  84. Batmarde says:

    @55

I’m pretty sure when it was released the background was gman sitting in a pile of melons, the cone one was added later.

  85. mon says:

Garry, you would make even more money if you were able to put gmod on console, too bad its a very far-fetched idea. Also, putting gmod on sale for the occasion?

Links:Garry.tv: GMod10 is 2 years old today! [...]

  87. Stefan says:

Some of you people are think he maybe a millionaire, but I heavily doubt that, because of tax. I reckon Garry had to do a tax self assesment and so, knock at least 20% of the 1 million mark, he’s at most earned £800,000 and even then I reckon he’s had to pay super tax, and then there’s NI contributions etc

Well, at least he’s got a lot of swank to say the least :P

  88. Simon says:

I remember a friend telling me about Garry’s Mod at a new years party in 2004/2005. This was around version 3 or 4 (it changed so frequently) when thrusters were first being introduced.

I’m jealous of your riches but if any developer deserves them, its you.

    Cheers and congratulations.

  89. ScarT says:

I’m surprised nobody have said it yet, so I’ll just do it.

    IT’S OVER 9000!

  90. kevkev says:

  101. agun says:

Gmod was something garry did instead of jacking off. Now you know kids, don’t jack off or you will loose BIG PROFITS! and stuff.

  102. Killuah says:

Also a thanks to the fans? No?

  103. agun says:

    MINGEBAGS GET ALL THE THANKS.

  104. finnbee says:

Supposing the 50% going to valve and 50% to Garry is correct, the $1.5 million = £1 million approximately with the current exchange rate BUT bearing in mind that it was released two years ago when the rate was over two dollars to the pound… so it’s somewhere between £750k and £1m. Now what everyone seems to have forgotten is that tax in this country for high earners is 45% (was 40%) before, and then there’s national insurance contributions which brings it closer to 50%…

My estimate is that he earned approximately between £375k and £500k… Am I close?

  105. MadsAGS says:

Woho, GJ Garry, and GZ! :D

  106. Jive Turkey says:

    Congratulations on the success.

I wish i could get Gmod 10…. im trying to get Gmod 9 to run without half life 2 or CS:S but no such luck yet lolz also GRATZ GARRY!

  110. Carsten says:

Late, i know, but: Happy Birthday from me!!

How about giving us L4D Content& the KI features für NPCs in Gmod as a birthday present? :)

P.S.: I knew it right when i readed this post.. everybody will bitch about the money. Guys.. he made a good and unique Mod, did a good job “selling” the idea to Valve, they have seen the potential.. i think Team Garry deserves every Dollar, no matter how much it is at the end.

  111. Narkaleptic says:

@Carsten, I’d rather wait for the EP3 engine, even though that’ll be torture.

    I calculate at 50% profit:
    $1,562,705 US
    1 228 567 EURO
    1 045 543 GBP

    Great job, Garry, and congratulations.

  112. Danny! says:

Looks like everyone has failed at looking at facts, garry didn’t get the $1.5mil in a lump sum, which means the tax would have been lower as he was earning the money over a period of time. Please re-attempt your math, i’m to tired, it’s 4:30am.

Btw: fantastic job garry, can’t wait to see what happens next.

  113. TheBoff says:

I absolutely loved the gman/cone thing! The look on the guys face made the whole thing hilarious!

Good Effort with the mod: I hope your engine is a success (even if it does use filthy javascript ;)

  114. Finnbee says:

@110 – Yes earned over two years – Still well above the high earning threshold (£150k in the uk?) so highly taxed.

  115. Raul says:

Congratulations on the success of your game… So are you done with Gmod? Can we expect more updates in the future?

  166. [...] Its 2 years today since GMod went on sale on Steam. [---] GMod hasnt just given me financial stability, Its also made me a lot more experienced in c++. I learned how game engines are meant to work. I got to fly to Valve HQ and meet some game making dudes. I got to tell a nice bearded fellow how I was sick all over myself in the shower after eating airline food, and then realising I was talking to Warren Spector. And its my hope that it has inspired other people to do stuff. I mean, Im a fool like you, Ive just got more experience in pretending Im not, and I did it.. So why cant you. But I couldnt have done it alone. Thanks to: All of TEAM GARRY, and all those that contributed ideas and suggestions. Thanks to all of Valve, but especially ErikJ, because none of this would have happened without him and to Alfred and Jason for putting up with my many updates. Looks like it’s time for all you aspiring modders to sharpen up your skills and get to work on your next big project. Source: Garry’s Blog [...]
