I beat spore last night. Well kind of.
Everyone was saying that the space stage is awesome and that everything else is just training you up.
Cell Stage. Fun casual game. Looks good.
Creature Stage. I could take or leave the creature stage. It’s fun making your creature better so he can impress people. It’s not fun doing it 32 times.
Tribal Stage. Like an RTS except with two buttons. Friend or Kill. At one point everyone was pissed and wrecking my hut. Then when they wrecked it it said “oh no, lets try that again fresh” and it loaded a saved game where they were half way through wrecking it. I almost gave up but clicked a fireworks button which made one of the tribes my friend and they beat the other tribe off.
City Stage. I did kind of enjoy it. I don’t know why I was religious though. I hate religion. Plus nothing I did seemed to mean I would lose. It seemed inevitable that I would win. Even so, it was a nice RTS kind of thing. Hated building my own buildings and stuff (and didn’t, I used the built in ones).
Space Stage. Impressive, complicated, confusing, overwhelming. It’s the space stage. I flew around a bit, picked some people up. Decided that I don’t really care enough to keep playing it. There’s no real reward to blowing a planet up or whatever, so why bother playing for 4 hours to get the laser to do it. I probably would have played longer if there wasn’t a load delay between leaving planets/solar systems. But not that much longer.
So I think I’m done with it.
I agree with pretty much everything you wrote.
Spore didn’t blow me away, but it’s still a good game.
Spore pissed me off.

I agree..the hype Spore created has jsut dissipated.
I played SPORE 2 hours yesterday and I’m at the City stage.
My friend played 9 hours and he’s at the tribal stage.
Load delay? I’m have yet to encounter what you describe, it just zooms straight out. I do agree though, a lot of the game is quite tedious.
I fully agree with you Garry…
I was disappointed that the game seemed to be more about inteligent design (which is a disgustingly pathetic theory) than evolution!
yep i hate religion too…
ye i played for a few hours finished up untill the space stage flew around got bored… havent played it anymore. gets boring pritty fast
Yeah, so if you guys don’t know why you got religion, you did because you were friendly in tribal stage, be at the middle for economic, and bad for warrior.
If you’re dreading using the editors, you’re probably not the target audience. I don’t mean to say you’re doing it wrong – Spore has far less universal appeal than anyone expected.
I can easily spend hours in the editors, and it’s awesome seeing my creations come to life. But that’s due to the way I play games.
tl;dr Spore is a great game for some, and a major disappointment for others, depending on how you like your games.
I thought garry hated sentences starting with “So”…
Makes me not want to get the game, given all the bad ratings I’ve heard.
Tayrtahn said it correct. If you’re not a creative person that wants to spend hours making each object then the game is not for you. Yes you can use hacked 3d studio max and others, but this is the simplest and fastest way and play with it in game. Seems like all the games garry and others want is a total goal linear based game. Like you said, in space there is no goal, therefore game ends when you win civ. While others couldn’t wait to get to space where the game finally starts. When it isn’t the standard goal linear game anymore. I can’t wait for the next FPS story game where I can predict what will happen next, and the trick to advance before I am supposed to.
CHEESEBALLS
This will be a informative comment rather then one above. It is important to say at space phase there is a bit of exploration goal. Just to make it to the center of the universe it requires a lot of effort of money and upgrades to improve your ship enough to make certain jumps, to make refueling cities along the way, and to find black wholes to travel around. You also get to basically make your own planet as well once you unlock all the terraforming tools.
Wow, I knew you could create some pretty dodgy characters, but I never knew you could beat other tribes off too!
Hate that load time.
Space was the worst stage, creature sucked aswell.
Tribe and cell = win
City was ok.
you can mail it me so i can take a huge dump on it.
STOP playing spore and do more developing on GMOD! PLEASE
This game looks terrible. This is why I don’t pay any attention to video game ‘hype’ and why console gaming is the bane of my life.
Also Garry, I can’t help but notice your blog is slipping? Doesn’t seem as popular as it once was and your blog posts seem to be getting less interesting. Maybe it’s just because they’re often focussing on console games which I don’t have much interest in.
Chrish,
Spore is a PC game. What the hell made you mention console games?
Besides, I don’t remember the last time Garry talked about console games.
The DRM killed this game for me. like i really secuROM bullshit killing my PC!
Why does this game look terrible? Out of the five stages, there’s a good chance that you’ll enjoy one of them. Even if you don’t like that, you’ll probably enjoy building a creature, or a building, or a flying boat.
It seems like a lot of the people pissing on Spore haven’t played it or are just being anti-fanboy, and trying to stick out of the crowd (which is ironic, since it’s a pretty sheepy thing to do. “If you want to be different, hate Spore, just like us!”). I’m not a Spore fan-boy, I like the game, but it’s not amazing. What do you expect from five different genres stuck into one game? If you want to make a point, play the game, give valid reasons why it’s not good, rather than “I got bored for no reason,” “It got too much hype/All the hype is gone,” and “It doesn’t look good.”
Just ignore the hype, or whatever it is that you hate for no reason, try the game, then tell me using SENSE that it’s not good. That’s when I’ll take your opinion seriously.
Also, it doesn’t matter if you’re not creative, you can choose over a thousand pre-made things by Maxis alone if you don’t to make it yourself.
ye
I’d waited for this game for around 3 years. i think the hype probably killed it a bit for me.
The game was impressive but very repetetive in nature, when you get to the space stage it comes a case of slowly upgrading your ship and then getting past the grox. once you get to the centre of the galaxy yay a new toy but that gets old pretty quickly. there are a few fun things to do in the game that have kept me occupied however, like finding earth for example. i’ve started playing the game through for the second time as an industrial character and so far its much easier than religion or military have been.
I liked the part where you got to the center of the galaxy. That was pretty cool.
If you think the space stage is boring, you have not gotten to the center of the galaxy yet. *HINT HINT*
You've been religious because you had 2 or more green cards.
