People are asking for the Facewound source. The answer is no. It makes me cringe. It’s like giving people your old clothes but not washing them first. I hope this picture illustrates the point.

He’s saying he won’t give out the source code to Facewound. He is not saying he won’t make Facewound: Source.
You knew he wouldn’t ever release the source code or continue Facewound in a previous blog post he made about what he learned in Gmod, to be honest, I didn’t believe that post when I saw it, but then I gave it some thought and realized how it was possible.
This is why you shouldn’t learn to code using the Source SDK, there’s a lot of it you won’t understand and if you manage to get code working, it will be horribly inefficient. Thank god Garry remade Gmod early on while some of this was discovered.

Facewound isn’t a mod
I think that Garry should find someone that REALLY knows their programming, and then he could give it to them to fix up. Facewound is just such a cool game and doesn’t deserve to be left out in the cold.
SourceForge it! Who cares if the code is ugly, there’s a quite obvious fan base, among whom I hope there are at least a couple coders.
If not that, then how about me? Just personally. Gimme a copy please. :-)

Because GOD DAMNIT you’ve got me addicted and I just can’t stop playing with it. (That’s what she said.) I’d gladly buy a finished, more moddable Facewound for a nice sum of money, like $10-20 easily.
Either work on it or give the talented members of our community the source code. Think of it as, instead of giving your clothes to people without washing them, giving your clothes to the dry cleaners to get them cleaned. Why let what you’ve got so far go to waste? Even if it is unpolished?

Why not SourceForge it to give people a chance to fiddle around with it? You may be ending up with some people who know how to wash cloth.

Well then Garry, I see nothing wrong in not releasing the source for FW. After all you’ve worked hard on it for long hours and aren’t required to release it, you even planned on selling it from what I remember.
I also see that you’re using Synergy, and I congratulate you for that. It’s the perfect program for all of them OSes (using it for controlling my two other computers at home, one XP and one linux.)

YOU HAVE NO OPEN-SOURCE ETHICS! The whole point of open-source is that people can fix your code and make it better! Projects are better developed by communities. Not releasing code because “Its too messy.” is the DUMBEST reason I have ever seen!

What if he just plain old dosent want people to rip off his game, use his code and get emails complaining how it dosent work?
He has idiots emailing him every day “LOLZ U MADE A BUG” why the hell would he want 300 illiterate non coders who just downloaded visual studio to “mod” his code emailing him “HAI IT DSNT CMPILE, HLP PLZ”.
Open source is all well and good but the comunity he would be releasing it to on a whole arnt going to be much use. If his entire code base is as messay as he says it is, it would all need re-coding so why the hell not just start your own comunity project?

F-offMod I think is the old editor, but I’m not totally sure… It WAS in an older version of FaceWound but it might have been called F-ed up editor or smething else, so…I dunno.

That’s why you slap a license on the code before it goes out. GPL would get Garry on at least a legal ground so people couldn’t just repackage and resell this thing; but otherwise, yes, the idea of open source is anyone can look at it, use it, modify it, whatever. It’s a Good Thing.
There’s always a risk of people ripping it off and calling it their own, but that’s what you gotta take sometimes. Worst comes to worst, contact a few of the Lua coders on the forums and see if they want it. Or just finish it yourself. Honestly, you could make a lot of money, ESPECIALLY if you make it much more moddable. (Custom enemy support, map based text bubble support.)
Garrysmod has already given you a nice chunk of money, but imagine doubling it? That will give you even more time to consider what you’re doing and get everything sorted out for what you want to do in the future. Sometimes, instead of aiming for the “next big thing”, you’ve got to just make something to A. get money, B. get practice, and C. get noticed. Facewound would give you half a dozen more years to sit back and plan for the future. Doesn’t sound so bad, eh?

Let him do what he wants. Opening up the source is hardly mandatory for all abandoned projects. No one expects a painter to show off an unfinished painting, why should garry have to show you all the source to the unfinished game? Just releasing the binaries was generous of him.

I think you could make money the same way Introversion Software did. They sold their (messy-ish) source code in a CD to allow people to mod it.

You need to get Firefox Garry. Couldn’t someone crack it to get the source, Because I don’t know much about programming but couldn’t you decompile the .exe or something?
I wouldn’t care about AI code so much as system code (render loop, ticking, scene management, VBO batching). So it really doesn’t matter whether or not it is messy – you don’t read code like you read a book.
And what’s that in comparison to the GMod source? :P
