I haven’t updated for a while so I’ll post a real life stuff blog that you all love so much.

My grandad died a few days ago. I didn’t really want to mention it in a blog at the time because I didn’t feel like getting all the “sorry hope you’re ok” comments, and the inevitable trolling comments. Right now everyone’s getting ready for the funeral this Tuesday. Which is going to be hard.

I bought funeral clothes yesterday. I’ve never worn a suit in my life. I taught myself how to tie a tie yesterday.

I bought Bully for the 360. It’s really buggy. Rockstar said it was only really broken on old 360s.. but I bought my Elite less than 2 weeks ago. So I dunno. Awaiting the update before I carry on playing it. Hope it fixes the loadtimes between areas. Jesus that’s annoying. I wish they’d given the 360 twice as much memory. Seriously, memory is cheaper than dirt. Could have totally got rid of these load times when leaving/entering buildings. But I guess then everyone would make the textures super high res instead of reducing loadtimes.

I bought some knives yesterday. I didn’t have any knives before that. I made a bacon sandwich the day before and had to cut the bacon and tomatoes using a Stanley knife.

I bought a computer chair from Ikea. It’s a bent peice of wood with wheels on the bottom. My sister said not to get it because it would hurt my bum after sitting on it for a while. I went up without her and bought it. It hurts my bum after sitting on it for a while.

I think I’ve got to move my computer. At the moment I’m operating over wifi, but this doesn’t seem to be cutting the mustard with TF2. Every 30 seconds or so it freezes for a second. I dunno maybe there’s settings I can tweak. There’s no phone line sockets around here so it either means a drastic move to the other corner of the room or having wires trailing all over the place. Bah.

I bought a quieter kettle. My old kettle was loud. Which is a problem when you have the kitchen in the living room. This new one is like a kettle for ninjas that need to make tea when they’re killing people.

I bought a new toaster too. My old one was broke and I couldn’t be bothered to send it back. This new one is awesome because it has a countdown timer. Like every toaster should have.

I’m sorry to hear that about your granddad. I hope he had a long and wonderful life.
My granddad died about a week ago. It was hard but he had long life and he had been sick in the last two years, so after all it was the best thing that could happen.

Have you tried turning off zero wireless for your wireless connection Garry?

Run -> services.msc – scroll to bottom disable Windows Zero Config

Should fix any momentary pauses you get in game while using wifi. That’s if you’re using XP.

Do a bit of googling for more information

Have you thought about those ethernet through your regular ‘electricitysockets’? You’re obviously using power where your pc is, so there probably are some empty sockets. That type of networking is pretty evolved now, and seems to work pretty well so give it a thought :)

Consoles have low amounts of RAM on purpose because it’s faster than having more. The bandwidth is extremely quick on those pieces of RAM, unlike common PC RAM.

you could get the kind of network that goes in the electrical outputs and through the power-network thingy. No idea what speeds or anything, just heard it works.

About the wifi, you could run an ethernet cable from your computer to wherever, cover it with electrical tape so it doesn’t slide, and put a rug over it.

You could install an outlet for said cable by your computer, but that probably won’t be easy, clean or cheap.

I only have two outlets where my desktop is and only the bottom ones work because the tops are three-way for the dimmers. So I’ve got printers, ehd’s, lamps, ect. plugged into power strips and my router is across the room even though my modem socket is right behind my computer. So it goes through my printer, computer, answering machine, then across the room to my wireless router, and then to my dsl router(not in that order.) Then I’ve got a 15ft lan cord going to the wireless router. It all runs underneath my massive sectional couch. Plus I drilled a holes to the basement so I could run the surround sound wires to my tv and pc. Guess you don’t have that option though. Best just tweak the wireless settings.

Get yourself a flat cat6 patch cable; it’s very easy to run under the skirting boards because, well, it’s flat. Saves you the hassle of moving your whole PC around.

I’d suggest that you first try a hard line connection without moving all your stuff, just in case the wireless internet isn’t the actual problem.

I would wonder if they would use high res textures. Really high res textures are not very common today and I absolutely don’t like this. I’m tired of detail textures. UT3 shitty graphics for a next gen title because on the one hand the water is damn ugly and on the other hand it all looks the same because of detail textures.

I run an ethernet cable from my modem which is by my back door all the way up to my bedroom on the second floor.
Nine meters of cable, tagged to the roof. It’s the same color as the walls and ceiling anyway. I would use WiFi but the seizing up thing happens to everything, and it goes for about ten seconds. Vista doesn’t seem to have any form of Zero config to turn off, so I just use my wireless router as a network cable plug (since it has 16 ethernet slots on it)

Nice kettle too. Is it like black? What if the light reflected off it and alerted the people that the ninja was making tea? And my toaster is from like 1998. :D

I’d say try fiddling with your rates if you’re having trouble with lag. I’ve got a wireless connection and it works fine.

Is your toaster a toaster-toaster or a toaster-oven? Toaster ovens kick ass. We have one that even has a “pizza” mode and convection baking mode. Great for anything small and quick you want to make that fits inside. Oh, and it can do six pieces of toast at a time. $50.00 USD too.

I’m running on XP, but I don’t wifi and I still get that odd lag. Strangely though it only appears with tf2 and the lag spikes disappear after few minutes. My ping is normal except every 15 seconds or so it laggs hard.

Also got the same issue with TF2. Had it since the game came out, 2 routers and 3 wifi cards later it still happens. Haven’t got a clue why so if you ever figure it out it’d be nice if you could publish it.

I had the same cable problem as you Garry, but my bedroom is on the third floor and the router is on the bottom floor.

We invested in 2 Powerline ethernet plugs, one plugged into the router, one for every other pc in the house.

They work like a dream!!!

The ones I have are only 10MB/s but that’s more than adequate, I know now that you can get 200MB/s ones..

Have a look on ebuyer or something, they’re not expensive :)
