Movies

Since the XBox update allowing the playback of divx/xvid, I’ve been watching some movies. Here’s what I watched.

Futurama: Bender’s Big Score

Apparently Futurama was cancelled. I didn’t know this but it happened a couple of years ago I think. But they made a movie for some reason. This is it. Futurama was sometimes good. If you were exchanging cartoons for each other you’d probably trade 3 Futuramas for a Simpsons. But there was the odd Futurama that actually had some depth behind it, that was clever. You’d trade one of those episodes for a Simpsons. Maybe even for two episodes of modern Simpsons (Homer gets a wacky new job!!! LOL!).

Anyway, it was good. It had some good time travelling jokes in it. Lots of internet jokes for some reason. Like more than usual. Worth a watch.

Chasing Amy

I used to think that Kevin Smith had only made two good movies (Clerks + Mallrats), but apparently he made 3. Yeah ok Clerks 2 was alright but it was basically Clerks 2. Chasing Amy isn’t as good as Clerks or Mallrats, but it when it’s good it’s good.

It’s basically about a guy who wants to nail a girl but she’s a lesbian but then they’re like fuck it and they do it anyway, then he finds out she fucked loads of guys so falls out with her. That’s pretty much the whole plot. And it would be a total boring pile of crap if it wasn’t for that guy who was in Mallrats and the whole nerdy comic theme jokes. It’s definitively worth watching if you can put up with the annoying screeches coming from the front of the girl’s face (whose name I can’t remember).

Cool Hand Luke

I know what you’re thinking “Fuck Me Newman, this film was made in the 60s. That’s 45 years before I was born!”. I used to think that it would be awesome to go into the future 50 years and watch all the great TV shows and movies that are going to be released. Then I thought hang on, why not go back in time and watch all the old films you haven’t seen yet. The only problem that I found was that it’s a lot harder to go back in time than it is to go forward. Luckily, unlike things created in the future, most of the things that were created in the past still exist in the present. So lets watch some old movies that we haven’t seen before.

There’s something sweet about the jail in Cool Hand Luke. At first I kind of expected it to be like Shawshank, with people making each other their bitches. But there’s a scene where they have a fight, but it’s all legal and organised, they’re wearing boxing gloves. The one guy is obviously winning the fight, but the other guy (luke) keeps getting up and forces his opponent to beat him pretty badly. So all the guys are in a circle cheering the fight on.. and Luke’s nose bleeds. And instead of the normal TV/Movie reaction of “YEAH HIS NOSE IS BLEEDING KILL HIM!!”, they’re all tutting and shaking their heads and walking off because they don’t want to see him take a beating. And even the guy who’s beating him doesn’t want to. And it’s kind of like, wow, yeah, that’s how people should react to voilence.

Long story short, Luke keeps escaping from jail even though he’s only in there for 2 years and they keep punishing him worse and worse for escaping. Then eventually they shoot him through the face and kill him. It’s hard to pull any moral out of it. Other than Luke does what he feels like and you can’t stop him, even by hitting him and working him half to death. Kinda makes you wonder whether Luke had ADD or something. What would they do with him today.

Here’s some guy playing the theme from it (much too quickly).
