There’s been a few rumours in the past week about Half-Life 2 for Mac, Steam for Mac yadda yadda. (Which has probably all been overshadowed by the Portal 2 announcement now).
So inevitably I start getting emails along the lines of “Will you make GMod for the Mac if it’s true”.
It depends on a lot of things. I haven’t heard ANYTHING about it yet. I don’t know whether the orange box version of the engine will run on Mac, platform issues, what’s happening with shaders, or whether it’s all academic because it’s using some kind of emulator and will work anyway.
But the bottom line is, “I’ll do my best to make it happen”.
Hurray! but who cares? mac sux (windows too, but i'm n00b to use linux)
I was considering to buy a macbook for school work and that kind of stuff, if Steam and GMod are going to the mac that would be awesome.
Nice, what about linux?
Awesome to hear garry. If this becomes a reality, I doubt I'll go near my windows computer more than once a fortnight. :D
I would just buy a normal laptop (or install windows on it)
Trying to control Garry's Mod with one mouse button will be like trying to drive a car with one pedal
Console fanboy. Each operating system has its own pros and cons. Windows is excellent at gaming, Linux is free and good for working. Macintosh is marketed at artists, though with the way Jobs is bashing Adobe I wouldn't be surprised if Adobe dropped Illustrator and Photoshop support. If Valve supports Mac OSX and creates a Steam port and a Windows runtime environment for the operating system, good for them. There's a market for games for Macs, and since Steam is the largest digital distributor, it would make sense to market games for another operating system as well.
Get a mouse with 2 buttons then :))
Could that possibly mean that mac development may result in linux dedicated server files?
Yeah
I'm sure Valve will think of ways to use the multi touch mighty mouse features for primary fire and secondary fire.
My pet theory is official Wine support by Steam and Source. If so garry all you would have to do is make sure any code you've written doesn't make wine explode, and you're mac compatible.
Well, since Mac OS == Linux, probably.
So what about Linux server support. :')
Wrong.
MacOS is based off of BSD, which, while similar in many ways, is definitely not == Linux.
Furthermore, a lot of the software written for Mac is based off the many APIs Apple's come up with over the years, and as such porting it to Linux would be no different than porting a Windows program to Linux.
All that said, something like a dedicated server likely does NOT have a use for these APIs, and as such a Mac -> Linux port would probably be very easy.
1) You've moved from DirectX to OpenGL and friends. Just done half the work.
2) You've moved from windows API's to POSIX apis. Another half the work.
Creating a window and all that jazz is trivial, and that's really all that's left.
Mac to Linux and Linux to Mac ports are so much easier than Windows to anything or anything to Windows ports.
That would be terrible. Wine is a terrible solution. Take the worst console port in the world, make it worse by a few factors, and you have anything using wine.
Did you just call him a console fanboy for hating macs? Somehow I find it hard to even take you seriously…
If you do that, I have to kill you :D
In this kind of context, what is the difference between an emulator and a port?
This will be interesting. I enjoy the idea of games being a universal thing for all gamers; Mac, PC, and Linux users together.
Well that would definitely make long hours in college more interesting.
Yep, macbooks are full of poopoo. [Factual statement]
They'd better. I used to run a Linux server on my laptop. Good for singleplayer and multiplayer. Then gmod couldnt be served in Linux and i didnt wanna use WINE so i put windows back on and i got keyboard/trackpad problems every time. I had to stop using linux on my machine I use for gaming (not a good gaming machine) because WINE just does not seem like a good idea as I had many issues with performance and crashing. I love GMod and play it almost-”vanilla” (I used to go 100% “vanilla” except game content, now I use wire and phx). I'm now experimenting with settings to get GMod to run multithreaded (the parts that I know CAN run multithreaded, that is.) and failing. I love it so much I want more of it per second!!!!!!!!! Must get 60 fps O_O !!!
No he called him a console fanboy because he hates all operating systems.
Macs just aren't for gaming… oh sure, back in the days of the Apple II, maybe, but not now. If you're going to start making Gmod for another OS, might I suggest Linux?
Yeah, a Linux port would be spectacular.
meh, i doubt ill ever have a mac, so i dont rele care, lol, but itd be good for the guys using it, maybe one day the software will be smart enough to convert itself, lol
MacOSX is Unix based, NOT BSD. I don't know where you got that information.
Who would use the trackpad for Garrysmod? Every mouse is two-buttoned anyways. The old hockey puck mice Apple made aren't used at all and now Apple knows better than single buttoned mice.
Aaannd yet theres not even the slightest consideration for Linux server binaries.
Whoops, helps to read the above comments. Apologies.
BSD and Linux are Unix based. MaxOSX uses large parts of BSD. Depending on how much of BSD is used it could be claimed to be BSD based, however this also means that it is Unix based because of the transitive nature of the relationship.
Making something compatible to run using wine is merely the first step.
Wine also has libraries so you could compile the program directly into Linux, making it possible to run with wine will make it possible to go the rest of the way.
With an emulator you've got a separate program pretending to be a Windows machine translating the instructions from the program into ones the native system allows.
With a Port you're rewriting the program to use instructions that the native system allows, which means it doesn't need the extra emulation layer which is what will slow things down.
I'm worried this step will bring in another wave of Mingebags. Whether correctly or not Macs are associated with rich idiots. Even if this statement is false then we'd still be exposing Garrysmod to a new audience, with its own supply of idiots.
Chances are they would probably be more likely to pay the $10 because they've already spent more than they needed to on a computer.
I have a Mac, but I would never use it for gaming past flash games on the internet. Although I would definitely download Steam and GMod onto it, it wouldn't be used more than my PC.
This is great, I've been waiting for a linux port of the dedicated server files. Isn't a modern Mac also running unix under the bonnet ? (bsd or something).
You're presuming they've ported to OpenGL, they're most likely using the Cider wrapper: http://www.transgaming.com/business/cider/
Macs have right-click– shows how ignorant you are…
Normal apps work fine with wine, i.e. Spotify, MSO, etc. Games you should use something from TransGaming
Read up, he'd say he'll probably do it ;)
You know there are gaming mice for mac. I do not use mice made by apple for gaming. I use it for work.
Garry! I will love you for trying your best! I use a mac and hell would i uninstall windows 7 if steam is going macintosh :)
Really looking forward to this
I WANT IT TO BE WINDOS VISA
I WANT IT
I DONT HAVE ENOTH FOR HAFE LIFE
IT SHOD COME WITH HAFLI/HAFE LIFE AND BE FOR ALL COMPUTERS
Will you update GMOD to work on Portal 2 engine? when it will be done ofc.
That depends on many things
It does run Unix, Mac OS X is BSD based. It's very different from Linux though, even though porting between Mac and Linux is easier than with Windows.
Despite this, Garry has already semi-confirmed Linux binaries.
Yeah, becuase consoles doesn't have operating systems… -.-
You use Macs at your work… You must work at the Apple store…
Why 2? You all should get 5 button mouses,
Button 1 for fire; Button 2 for second fire; Button 3 for jumping; Button 4 for talking; Button 5 for sprays.
Not counting the scroll but counting the button in the scroll…
Yes but provided wine works well enough, there is no reason to go the rest of the way. Especially since most games are released and forgotten beyond a patch or two.
Also yes wine does have libraries which can be used to let you compile natively, but it's the same thing really. Papering over the cracks instead of fixing the problem.
If I'm not mistaken TransGaming just provides their own fork of wine.
You're in exactly the same boat.
“But the bottom line is, “I’ll do my best to make it happen”.”
Garry, you feeling aright?
If it's EP3 engine, which has been greatly updated, then necessity will have to be considered greatly.
In my opinion making garrysmod for Mac would be almost pointless most people who have macs use them for business and I'm not sure how much Ram a standard Mac computer has if its not enough I doubt most people are going to go out and spend money on Ram for one game.
Now, that's just retarded. Get a mouse with six buttons.
Whenever I use a mac, I can never get that right click to work, because it is constructed as one button with two different detectors. If Gmod does get Mac support, then the secondary fire would most likely be the side button, in my opinion.
If Valve surprise us with some decent port of the Source Engine for Mac; swapping-out Direct X for OpenGL etc, then a Mac version of most Source Engine-based games would be feasible, so long as any developers are willing to put in the work. This is no different with Garry's Mod.
If you own a Mac, or want to own one, and want to play Garry's Mod on it, then you've three options. VMware Fusion (Virtual Machine it), Crossover for Mac (Translate it) or Bootcamp (Dual-Boot it). So, if you do go for a Mac and Gmod isn't made available for Mac OS, then you're not completely screwed.
Yes, so I've read. I'm not going to deny I'm excited. :P
This only makes the need for Mac user kick plugin more urgent.
Why would you waste your time on porting gmod to macintosh? Hardly anyone uses them. They have what, 10% if that in market share? What's the chances that those 10% have a reasonable amount of their own that are gamers?
I don't think you should waste your time on that. Spend it another way, like improving + adding to the normal Gmod!
MacOSX is Unix AND BSD based. All flavors of BSD are descendants of Unix TSS 5 or 6, and as such BSD is based on Unix. From that on point, Unix and BSD developed separately, with some cross development. So in the end Mac OSX is a fork of BSD which is a fork of Unix.
End the history lesson.
Close, but no cigar. Linux was not Unix based initially. As development has gone on, some code from Unix and BSD has been merged into the kernel. However, Linux is not POSIX compliant like Unix, nor is it feature identical. A few Semi to Full POSIX compliant kernels have come around in the last two decades that are similar to unix, and of them only Linux shares some unix code these days. Minix, Hurd, and a few others are out there. If you were to look at the lineage of POSIX compliant and semi compliant kernels, you would see Linux, Minix, and Hurd being separate lines from Unix, which scant connections where portions have been merged.
Most Macs are used for media applications, from photoshop to video processing. They have as much ram as they can plausibly squeeze into them, RAM won't be a problem.
Oh i so agree – garry think about what we could do as GAMERS and AS PROGRAMMERS – :3 EP3 would make Gmod so much more better
I am all for anything that can get linux someday to at lest have stable servers in linux ! WITHOUT needing to use wine
I think alot of people would love you even more for that…
:3
Agree 9001 x Times
Yay for Garry!
“The Mac Versions of L4D1 and 2 don't run under emulation software but in native code.” If it's the same for rest of Valve games… then yay again!
Why would you NOT want to increase your possible customer base? Assuming VALVe make it easy for other source games (EG gmod) to port to OS X it would be a simple way to increase the number of customers.
No computer have one button mouses, not even Macs, only retards that are stuck in the 90's think that.
I love Garry's Mod, i play it almost all the time. Wouldnt it be a shame if my fav. deathrun server got turned Mac? I have PC, so I wouldnt be able 2 play it. (by the way, it's Sassilization.) I wouldnt be able to bear it. & also, on a slightly related note, IS THERE EVER GOING TO BE a way to fully animate ragdolls? & how about making some tf2 NPC's. i would love to put a dancing engi on my Strider. XD : — D
also, being able to fully mate items together would be awesome (you know, like stick them together? if you dont, ask some student who uses Inventor)
Right clicking is disabled by default in Mac OSX. You can enable it, but it's glitchy and didn't help me when I was modeling in Maya with it.
Yeah, by about 3 users.
You'll still be able to play on it. Mac and PC will play together.
Uhhh they are using OpenGL for this. It's confirmed.
Oh yes. Dedicated server for Linux would rock!
Personally, I just hope that people on Macs and PCs can play together.
They can – apparently
A friend converted from a PC to a Mac Mini a few weeks ago and with Boot Camp (The official program to allow dual booting with Windows on a Mac), he is able to play Left4Dead2, TF2 and GMod on mostly high settings. This is the base Mac Mini.
Current Macs are more than capable of playing source games than most prebuilt Windows machines from Dell for example. Though if you're doing PC gaming you mind as well build a machine :)
*Stevo Calls a friend that know lua (not saying name)** “Hows that mac ban script going ??” . Seriously i would HATE sharing the same servers with mac users , hopefully there will be a new option “Non – Mac” so that it finds servers that ban mac users on join.
The reason i do not like playing with mac users is that they are snobs who think they are it and try to compete with you on every factor in the universe , meaning PC and mac will be fighting over who can spawn a banana quicker. Please add the non-mac button
but what if some servers transfer to Mac only?
both of you are retarded. a 2 button mouse works just fine. you can set all the other functions to other keys.
And you are showing yourself to be MUCH better by discriminating against a group of users, and stereotyping at the same time?
By that logic you should have a “no 12 year olds” button as some of them are mingebags.
I personally think it is great that Steam is coming to the Mac. If Garrys Mod comes to the Mac then even better – however I'm more in it for dedicated server binaries.
It is I, the ever hated mac user! I remember the days of playing gmod on my crappy custom windows machine, but I got more into video and audio stuff, so I got a mac, despite the slander you guys have been throwing at it. Boy do I hate the apple mouse with no right click, and Steve Jobs is becoming more and more of an asshole, but I like the operating system, and how it just works. Screw the petty shit they're peddling. I'm glad steam is coming to the mac, so that I won't have to switch over to windows to play a good game!
I would'nt mind playing with mac users, would bring in a few new faces and some different people.
Your elitist arrogance is sad.
Dude… Gmod has been available to mac users for a long while now… We just now have an easier way to use it… And we aren't rich. We just don't by third rate plastic instead of computers….
How would that be possible? A server that only allows Macs?
I'm not so sure. Macs are far, far better at graphics and rendering than windows. (I speak from experience here, I am an animator, I've worked with 2D and 3D on windows and Mac).
Since games have a large graphic component, I would think they would be suited to playing games.
You do know that the newest Mac mice have side detection, so they know whether or not you are clicking on the left or right side.
Anyway, a lot of mac users (especially mac gamers) have Logitech multi-button mice anyway.
They do kinda now. 360 has dashboard, Wii has the Wii home. I dunno about the PS3 though.
Valve announced today it will bring Steam, Valve's gaming service, and Source, Valve's gaming engine, to the Mac.
Steam and Valve's library of games including Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series will be available in April.
“As we transition from entertainment as a product to entertainment as a service, customers and developers need open, high-quality Internet clients,” said Gabe Newell, President of Valve. “The Mac is a great platform for entertainment services.”
“Our Steam partners, who are delivering over a thousand games to 25 million Steam clients, are very excited about adding support for the Mac,” said Jason Holtman, Director of Business Development at Valve. “Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and we have added a new feature, called Steam Play, which allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge. For example, Steam Play, in combination with the Steam Cloud, allows a gamer playing on their work PC to go home and pick up playing the same game at the same point on their home Mac. We expect most developers and publishers to take advantage of Steam Play.”
“We looked at a variety of methods to get our games onto the Mac and in the end decided to go with native versions rather than emulation,” said John Cook, Director of Steam Development. “The inclusion of WebKit into Steam, and of OpenGL into Source gives us a lot of flexibility in how we move these technologies forward. We are treating the Mac as a tier-1 platform so all of our future games will release simultaneously on Windows, Mac, and the Xbox 360. Updates for the Mac will be available simultaneously with the Windows updates. Furthermore, Mac and Windows players will be part of the same multiplayer universe, sharing servers, lobbies, and so forth. We fully support a heterogeneous mix of servers and clients. The first Mac Steam client will be the new generation currently in beta testing on Windows.”
Portal 2 will be Valve's first simultaneous release for Mac and Windows. “Checking in code produces a PC build and Mac build at the same time, automatically, so the two platforms are perfectly in lock-step,” said Josh Weier, Portal 2 Project Lead. “We're always playing a native version on the Mac right alongside the PC. This makes it very easy for us and for anyone using Source to do game development for the Mac.”
Apparently some people in the “keep mac snobs out because they're all minges” camp don't understand your second point. They also don't seem to realize that they have been playing on the same servers as us “mac snobs” for years. I dual boot into xp just to play gmod and tf2. I don't understand why this is such a big deal.
They aren't better at all. If you build a computer with the same or similar specs, it's going to perform similarly or better than the mac.
MAC SUCKS … Dont stop working on PC because of mac that suck if happening …
But make it work on linux then …. for binary
That really sucks …
Hell yeah, i was just thinking about that.
WOW! MAC IS GOING TO BE ABLE TO RUN SOURCE ENGINE? Im impressed something with such little power can.
You Mac users are probably now thinking, “How do YOU know they have almost no power!?!”
My answer is cos I just do, and theres nothing you can do about it. :P
On that note, you can bind +attack2 to a keyboard key. But for Garry's Mod, you really should have a scroll wheel with your two buttons.
There is really no longer a reason to dis the power of Macs, they run Intel processors and use the same graphics cards that PCs do. In and prior to the iMac era, they were definitely just over sized graphing calculators. But I hate MacOS only because the interface is oversimplified for my taste.
Macs are better at some things, like animating and general media… often the graphics comes down to the software, rather than the hardware, though. The games would be different, though, because actual real-time processing is less of a focus than proper rendering.
Depends on your control scheme. I'd be forever hitting the buttons by accident and emptying a shotgun clip into a wall I meant to spray on. I know a 5 button mouse would be helpful with Gmod though… all those buttons to lock the physgun and so forth. Some people use right-click as 'walk forward'. Whatever. You need a goddamn scroll wheel, either way.
The PS3 has the XMB interface.
You should stop being so ignorant and just flaming macs, they're decent machines.
And why would he stop working on the PC? Source can compile for Mac and PC at the same time now, so all changes will be universal.
You do know that a few keys loop? I know that Backspace, Delete, Home, Page Up, Page, Down, Insert & End loop if you hold them.
Also you only need 2 buttons & a scroll to really play Gmod but the other buttons help out a lot.
Oh shi—
I don't really like Mac or PC fanboys, and this can only open up another gate to hell.
PCs are better.
Here is the problem. Mactards = OHEMGEEE IT LOOKS SO COOL OUTSIDE! I BUY NAO!
PC geeks = hrmm… dell, shit to that… OOOHHH ALIENWARE WHAT ARE THE SPECS?
all you mactards care about is the looks. To get decent power on one of those things, it needs to be a $2500 MacBookPro, whereas you can get a PC (not alienware, they overcharge) or build a PC with better computing power for $1500. In fact, I will be purchasing an ASUS G72gx laptop from BestBuy for only $999.99, and it gets an average of 25fps on Crysis “GAMER” settings with 4xAA.
or 10 button LogiTech G500's.
1. Dell sucks.
2. What was his framerate?
3. A mini, really?
what is your take on this situation, Garry, don't take profit into account.
doodz dis guy is rite. mac users are uptight faggots olololo[/trolling]
You do realise that rich bastards hire people to make their own OS? :P
I agree, dude.
Dude, you best be trollan. lrn2find a mac vs PC place, then do some advertising.
Yes a Mini, the specs are pretty good for such a little machine. I'm not sure of the framerate though he never has complained about lag or poor framerates when playing with me.
Just because you own a computer of a certain brand doesn't mean they have to join a server and shove their dong in your face. Mac users are fine.
Now Linux users on the other hand, you'd be surprised if they even bought into such a proprietary game :)
So what you're saying is that a Mac put next to a PC with the same video card and a monitor of the same max resolution will produce better graphics? Typical Mactard; your argument died over 15 years ago!! Keep sucking that apple flavored cock of lies.
… ok im a mac user and im not uptight.
you do realize that's just a generalization.
If i was up tight and stuff i would go grammar nazi on you.
Macs are uber expensive when you want to get equal power of a PC. This is fact.
yea because i sound like that when i talk to people
steam does work on mac non natively… crossover
only 2 models of macs come with detacated graph cards…
Awesome idea!! In the end, it would be totally OK since Mac users would just minge anyways.
Someone willing to dual-boot or whatever to play a source game on a Mac probably knows a lot more than the average Mac user. That being said, the average Mac user would more than likely (judging by their behavior everywhere else) be a minge. Not busting on you, just the majority of the Apple fanclub.
i don't even get why they call mac users snobs…
I'm a mac user and im no snob. Same with if you are a mac user you are rich… im in the mid class.
I know right. What self-respecting company would use a Mac?
5% as of December 2009…
We don't care about the actual Mac, we care about the annoying attitude which revolves around the Mac.
Macs have right click. Get your facts right.
I have no idea why everybody hate Macs?. Srsly its just a OS like Windows??
If we get gmod for mac, will we finally get linux dedis?
I've never seen or heard of anyone who's a snob because they own a mac. It is however the favoured type of computer for 90% of all “hipsters”;)
Yes, but the mighty mouse sucks. Not only that, but you can't right and left click with it, simultaneously.
Are you all that thick!!!? Pc and Mac will combine together!!! Don't matter if your rich or not, whether you've got a pc or mac, all accounts and games will work on both systems. duh!! i for one, wouldn't mind having the mac users join steam, it'll bring more competition and fun. I've got a mac, and i'll say, i would love steam and valve to start bringing their games on here. heck, i'm excited!! But you lot have just got to shut your great mouths and pay attention, if you've got problems, you fix it with technical support from valve; if they'll even listen to you.
All it's saying is that they can run on different platforms. There won't be servers which can only allow Mac. Servers might be able to do this somehow, but PC and Mac users can and will probably play together on the same server.
It's only a change of a client OS.
Most of the 'annoying attitude which revolves around the Mac' is peddled by the Mac-haters of the world…
Stereotypes Anyone?
theres only one thing that can cure the mac vs pc war.
this quote:
“FUCKING WINDOWS 98!”
your the tard, no one cares about the look. its shell couldve been made of fossilized dinosaur shit for all i care. the stuff like photo booth and imovie HD and such, windows movie maker=failure. not even having a webcam photo program=failure blue screen=failure not having ability to switch between systems or run opposite programs in same systems= yet again, failure.
WRONG! they dont have poopoo.
to quote Steve Jobs, “They Cost Me 8 Bucks To Make and i pee in every one!”
thats you ignorant thought. look ill go out and buy a game that says “Games For Windows” and install it on here. no really Im not joking. i beat portal on this mac earlier today. no joke, no sarcasm. no fake. i also have gmod here. the official mac version will probably perform better, but i dont care atm.
the mac version of halo did that restriction. which sucks. a lot.
how many dumb asses comment on this blog anyway? and this one… i cant even tell if your serious or have sarcasm.
bootcamp and VMware are horrible. a copy of crossover games is practically perfect. im running it now. beat portal a few hours ago on it. and since a free copy of the crossover games isnt hard to find, specially since theres a patch for it, it would only make it better.
Hehem, WRONG! D:< ive never dual booted, and i probably no more than you. *reads rest of comment* yep, i do.
the one thing that shows we're not the snobs is that we're not bashing on other OS's. so how bout that? the entire logic of the pc side has failed in this huge band of controversial comments.
actually ive been playing on mac with the crossover, since alt is pretty much useless in all of these, i just changed the secondary fire command to ALT.
your joking right?
bet you use a windows as well.
and HDD playstation life, home, store, and so much more that i wont even attempt to put in a list.
Finally somebody who aint just a Mac hater :D
well i play gmod on a pc but iam really wanting and planning to get a mac so i would like for it to happen but your kinda right the whole idiots part
So you don't like Mac/PC fanboys and yet you say “PCs are better”.
Hypocrite.
Thats complete bullshit-> Current Macs are more than capable of playing source games than most prebuilt Windows machines from Dell for example.
Yah macs with integrated graphics chipsets will outdo an alienware with a core i7 and a gtx 285. That makes lots of sense. And you can save $500 by building the alienware yourself.
Actually the highest end mac gpu wont match the last gen 9800GT
I said most prebuilts, not all. By default most of the prebuilts have a larger priority on the hard drive and/or CPU. They don't expect a majority of people to do PC gaming or graphics intensive stuff. Alienware machines are expensive as hell, I know this. I've built my desktop for the purpose of gaming.
There is a likelyhood of a Mac user having a better experience with computer games than person who just dropped $500 on some Dell and thinks it's great because they sprung for a 1 TB hard drive. The Nvidia chipset in the recent Macs are pretty powerful compared to whatever cheap Intel chip that will come with most laptops these days.
Speaking of Intel chips, unfortunately Apple chose extended battery life over graphics performance in the last generation of MacBooks and Minis and chose the Intel GMA 950, a chip found in most netbooks now (Like the one I'm typing this on currently). It isn't the best chip, though it plays Plants vs Zombies, 007 NightFire and a steamless version of GMod 10 (I own the full version, though I don't always have an internet connection with the laptop) pretty well, though not enough to have an enjoyable game of TF2 or L4D.
Don't be a douche. You can just as easily install Windows on a Mac and do everything the exact same. No emulation at all. Windows users are just as arrogant and uppity as Mac users. As a side note, the term “mingebag” just makes you sound like even more of an idiot.
And with Bootcamp. Its really not that hard to install Windows on a Mac. People get all uppity about the brand on the outside when its what it's actually running that matters. Some of these idiots sound like one of my arrogant friends just saying “PC is better than Mac” even when I can equally run Windows 7 Ultimate on my “Mac” laptop. Either way its just a computer with two operating systems that work perfectly fine.
Yes gmod for mac It Will be awesome!!
The “Macs don't have right click” myth got so old after the first year or so. Hell, nowadays you don't even need an external mouse, you can set areas on your touchpad to use as a right-click button
Or, you could just get a different external mouse that is more to your liking than the Magic/Mighty Mouse?
Or, you could just, I don't know, right click with your touchpad? That might work. (Yes, it is absolutely possible if you have a relatively recent laptop, just to halt the “r u stupid? rite click with touchpad?” comments.)
Seriously, someone who actually *owns* a Mac is perpetrating this nonsense?
That makes no sense. Minges are minges, no matter where they come from.
If you want the Gmod community to be evolving, than you have to accept that there are idiots out there. For every Asswipe who ruins things you get ten people who are patient and willing to learn the rules and etiquette of the game, even though that isn't easy.
Can you honestly say that you never made any mistakes that bordered on mingeish when you started? How would you have felt if you weren't ever given the chance to take baby steps into a complex system? Try cutting people some slack every once in a while.
ill be able to play gmod again??
Yeah! Steam and Valve to Linux on the double! And yes, the Mac platform is also for games. Though Apple may not view the Mac as a gaming platform, developers should do their best to make their software available on all three platforms. If you make it for Linux, it's accessible to anyone with a computer. If you make it for just Mac and PC, you make it available to anyone who has + $1000 to spend on a Mac, or anyone who wants to put up with the high cost and frustrations of Windows.
You can call me 'ignorant' when you learn to punctuate.
Actually, the Mac only holds 3% of the PC market. Making a Linux port would be far more beneficial to a wider audience. But if you're going to make a Mac port, you might as well go ahead and make the damn port.
YES!
Now I can finally play Garry's Mod at school!
(I bring my MacBook EVERYWHERE…)
Who's to say tons of people won't suddenly download Steam to play Valve games when Steam launches on Mac. You can't tell what's more beneficial without being able to see or even predict results. Lots of Mac users play games, believe it or not. Where do you think Halo came from? Marathon. <3
And why the fuck would you buy a Mac then and then run a different OS the machine?
Stupid.
If you buy a Mac, you run OSX, not Windows, if you want to run Windows, save your money and get a faster computer for less money and stick Windows on it.
I think this whole 'hater' stuff between PC and Mac users is incredibly sad. You don't like Mac, don't buy a Mac. Don't be a douchebag about it, you arrogant fool.
Have you ever owned a Mac, or used one for a long amount of time? Probably not. Don't knock it until you've tried it. If you tried it and didn't like – fine just don't be so anal man, jeez.
I have been a log time mac user and have been playing Dark RP for years now, I have only been able to do so through emulators and it is a pain in the ass, if Garry is able to do a port it would be spectacular for people like myself beacaue the whole process would run a lot smoother. Don't be so ignorant and jealous in the future. :)
i dont understand why PC users dont want Mac users to play garrys mod wouldnt you want this great game to spread to everyone? In what way would it affect you negatively? I play gmod in crossover right now and i love it i hope it gets a native port
I switched to Apple computers aka “Macs” last week. I don't really like the hardware, it's not the design, but the specs you get for your money are really bad. It's just because i like Mac OS X (Pronounced Mac OS 10.) and not just that. It's because of the Third party software for Mac OS X, i found it easier to find good Mac OS X software than Windows software. (BTW, my mac has a Windows bootcamp partition, wich i reguarly use.)
Mac OS X is built on top of Darwin, Darwin is Apple's FreeBSD kernel. FreeBSD is based on Unix, so to clear things up a bit, Mac OS X is based on Unix, Mac OS X is based on FreeBSD, Mac OS X is NOT based on Linux.
That would just be like having a script that says:
Promote Alienware computer users to Administrator instantly.
Check the specs of a Custom built PC and ban if the specs are not high enough.
Come on guys, it's not the brand of computer nor the specs, it's the people! Remember the “Ban” feature in most online games, to prevent annoying people to keep entering a server?

Mac User/Windows user. (Bootcamp :D )
BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW! NOW I CAN'T ANYMORE SAY THAT MACS DON'T HAVE GAMES AND THEY SUCK! BAAAAAAAAAAAW! THIS IS SO WRONG!!!!!! BAAAAAAAW!
Yes, I play all Valve games on the mac, and Gmod as well. Of course, I need to use an external keyboard to use the numpad for garrysmod, but it's best because I don't have a PC that my brother doesn't use, and sometimes we feel like joining a server together…
That's such a logical explanation that it almost baffles me how much knowledge you have in that undoubtedly ginormous head you have.
I am using a mac right now, all I can say is get over it. Adding mac support will not kill Gary's mod. I dual run Windows on my mac and play Gmod, it would be awesome to get that hard drive space back. And no we aren't rich ass holes (my family is being foreclosed on and not because I have a Mac) and we don't just use them for business, we use our computers to do the same things your computers do, adding gaming makes sense, Its the whole reason I even put windows on the thing. Also the reason I chose mac is because I like the ease of use, so sue me.
CCRRRYYY SOME MOOOOORE!!!!
oh yes pc are so much cheaper after you spend $1000+ on virus blocker that mac comes with
but pc's are SO expensive after you get virus protection plus all that fai
blue screen of death = fail
virus = fail
lag = fail
I would list more but I think you get my point. if not
you = fail
why the heck does every one hate macs? if you don't like mac use your pc. just don't ruin things for mac users -_-#
So what you're saying is that a Mac put next to a PC with the exact same specs and the same monitor will not have the exact same graphics? I'm shocked, because they should have the same graphics. The Mac system will just perform better because it doesn't have a useless OS dragging it down with pointless processes and security holes.
You can buy any computer you want and run pretty much any operating system you want on it. Just because it's a “Mac” does not mean it runs OS X. I ran XP on my MacBook for like a year to play non-Blizzard games on it.
If such a thing existed, it would be the other way around. A server that only allows Windows. In fact, if you're going to run this on a Mac, just keep quiet about it when you join a server. People are probably not going to treat you nicely if they know that you are. They'll probably kick/ban you, in fact, it would probably say “Kicked By Console. Reason: Mactard” or something.
Stupidest thing I've ever heard.
Yes, because as a gamer I'll just buy the first computer I see because it “LOOKS SO COOL OUTSIDE!”
Get a life, and stop being so incredibly stupid.
Besides, both Macs and Windows computers are PCs. Or have we all forgotten that PC stands for Personal Computer, which is a description that fits Macs quite nicely.
Good to hear someone who is not an a**hole.
i beg to differ. i have tons of games i enjoy on here. sims 2, i have SOOO many clothing i made on body shop, on spore, i have a ot of cretures, and on candy crisis….sweet, sweet, candy crisis. playing the game since it came out.
i totally agree with ya, dude.
for reals, dude? how'd you do that? it will change the mac comunity for EVER!
Actually, using an outdated mac i can have the graphics a lot higher then my newly updated PC. With less choppiness also
Actually dude, I'm an ANIMATOR. I know the damn difference.
This is true, although there is still a difference.
the graphics library also makes a difference, Macs use OpenGL, Windows use Direct3D
True, but what about repair costs, upgrades and all that? Since macs don't break like windows, they end up costing less in the long run.
Not really, There are some differences in how they render. Macs have better rendering in general.
Example:
1 PC, 1 eMac. both about the same age.
Running a low end flash (2D) animation.
Result:
PC: Solid colours are criss-crossed by very fine white/grey lines.
Mac: Solid colours are actually solid.
That's the most noticeable thing.
True, but those are the ones you're gonna buy if you want them for graphics, right?
Anyway, it is possible to custom build a Mac. You gotta do it yourself though…
I like your attitude. We're all gamers, with steam for Mac we'll be playing the same games. (Linux will come in time, I'm sure of it)
It is better. I like it for its importance. Ok.
not anymore… they do it for you now
I will REFUSE to use Steam for Mac unless Gmod is on it.
what is wrong with all of you? why do you hate Macs so much? i bet everyone who says that Macs suck have never actually gone to an Apple store or even tried a Mac. Newer Macs are made for gaming, they have better graphics cards, run faster and render FAR better than a PC. I have problems with games on my recent PC, with a Mac, these games run smoothly. Also, just because Macs are expensive doesn't mean they are shit. for about £700 for a Macbook or £1000 for a Mac Pro, they are FAR FAR FAR more powerful than a PC, the price is worth paying for.
please hurry! ^-^
here here!!! i am a mac user, and sometimes i just wanna kick certain windows users ballz in cause they think that mac users are a joke and are a source of entertainment. why are there so many idiotic haters on this whole thread? why cant 1+1=2 instead of 1+1=YOU ARE A TOTAL MACTARD??? dont show idiocracy and say macs suck when you havent even used 1? u haters dont even kno why some of us like them! i like them for epic graphics, organized apps (aka usin ur email right through an app on your computer) and entertainment apps(imovie, photo booth, garageband)
I will just point out that for your average mac user GMod is waaay too complex. Apple did not design the Mac to take much effort to do anything, and GMod requires a nominal bit of effort to get it up and running. (Installing and updating Mods, SVNs etc.)
Can you imagine how much effort it would be to make this all simple enough for the casual mac gamer. (a very very very casual gamer, if you look at the gaming makert for mac, they are more casual than even console gamers)
All that time will be spent away from the PC when you could be giving us updates and goodies!
Uhhhhh… You're saying that because macs are easy to use, mac users are stupid? Seriously? Mac users are not stupid. See above comments, i mean one guy is an animator! (Thats not easy)
Look at how many comments there are on this page. These are all Gmod users, Mac and Windows users alike (with some Linux).
Why is everyone getting so ticked off that Garry said that he will try to get Gmod on the Mac? This is great news for Mac users, but why do the Windows users even care?
Appreciate it Garry! I know I'll be buying when it comes out.
So true, Macs are awesome but harder for games to run, due to only working with OpenGL
no they beat my friends high performance PC at running portal with high graphics :D
THANK YOU I TRY TO TELL PEOPLE. I mean a mac pro, 4 nvidia geforce graphics cards or ati HD I MEAN OMGA!
People, your beginning to make sense!
Honestly, anyone who didn't want 10% of their employees office time to be spent on the phone with tech support. For example, I know someone who was on hold for dell tech support for 2 hours. That's a lot of lost time.
Good luck on it, Garry!
haha, what are you talking about? I got a Macbook Pro for $1000 and it runs games beautifully. Do your research before making a biased comment like that again
I bought the Orange Box for Mac on Steam and it works excellently. I'm sure that this can be done. Thank you Garry!
but apple doesnt offer the macbook pro retail for under $1119……. ?
That is a really stupid generalization. Sure, macs are easy to use but that dosent mean that everyone who uses them is an idiot. Lots of people that use macs have come from Windows or Linux and still use those OS. If you dont know how to copy files around, you shouldnt be on a computer in the first place.
Macs also cant use gaming mouses. it's hard without the mouse3, mouse4….ext.

X D gary is awesome
I use the razer Mamba with my macbook Pro. It has a native driver, and it has Mouse 3, 4, and 5. It works perfectly fine on OS X 10.6.4
Make garrys mod for mac faster please i really want to play!!
i'm using a logitech mouse… ill see if i cant get one of those =D
Macs Now are starting to have nvidia graphics cards… that means they can play the most hi-def games out there. i personaly use all 3 systems i have a mac running VMware Fusion that runs Windows 7- i use fore game dev. and Ubuntu(linux)-I use this for programing and those programs that only work on linux.
i agree. i do the same stuff.
No. They all do.
BOOT-CAMP.
My macbookPro was only 1500 before my rebate and thats because i upgraded the ram to run VMware glitch free.
say you are going to collage like i did. save atleast 200$
agreed.
does now.
i run Ubuntu on my mac,.
i just got a Lazer DiamondBack… KICKS ass
Unix is Ruby Code based. :)
fool the Mac holds 8,9% (2008) and Windows by a narrow margin 90% so think before speaking ;-)
The important thing is the Operating System which will do everything better I'm using Mac OS X since 2 Months. Before that i was using Linux (Debian / openSuse/ Ubuntu) and Windows (XP / Vista / 7) … and now i only can say that Mac OS X runs better than Linux and Windows
Why anyone should do this? Most of Gaming Server are running with a Linux distribution and you can play on it … The Person who uses Windows Server must be insane xDD
Thats not true you can run every OS on a Mac but you cannot run Mac OS X on a non-mac machine ;-) and IT IS stupid to buy a Mac and running windows on it xD because Mac OS is the difference xDD
old post but it's so ridiculous I have to comment
I doubt very much that solid colours are criss-crossed. The point is? No.
If they are, it's not noticeable, so your argument is invalid anyway.
Yeah, I know it sounds weird, but it's there. I'm not making this up.
It *is* kinda noticeable.
hahah fail if a mac cant handle it how omce garry has already compiled it with about 3 bugs? seriously get your facts right
Looking at my screen here, all the colours look pretty much solid to me. Not criss-crossed or anything.
Whatever this is, I can't see it.
(even when running a low-end flash animation as you said. If this only happens with flash animations, then it is flash, not windows.)
To be fair, It was an old windows. I thought i said that, but I didn't. Sorry.
I had an eMac and a windows machine about teh same age (ie, fairly old) and I got that effect. it's doesn't happen on new computers.
lol, the criss-crossing was probably due to a different screen or some sort of dithering :)
technically one shouldn't break any more than the other, although this is probably true.
Mac OS X is good for some things and Windows is good for others. Get over it.
The only thing that could possibly have any impact on gameplay would be that Macs need to use OpenGL instead of DirectX.
(talking about the OS here.. not the hardware)
You know your a nerd when you argue about computer history.
ok guys look i have a pc but what i did is dual-boot windows with mac osx 10.6.4 retail. i downloaded steam for mac os and played some hl2 — NO DIFFERENCE!!! completely the same experience no change.
I have the World of Warcraft gaming mouse on my mac right now, 14 buttons on it. So…your wrong.
This random hatred is what drives me mad. I bought a mac for college, since I dont want to fuss with problems, viruses, and battery life. I have had a PC for YEARS and have been playing Garry's Mod on it since it was…well… free!
All I want to do is continue my Gmod career at college, and on a machine with 8gb of RAM…like this mac I am typing it on. It's simply a newer machine for me, so I want to use it for Gmod.
Why let macs win? they dont deserve garrysmod! Well if you do go ahead you will be feeding the troll the mac troll! but you will make alot more profit! so profit or pride?
and how many steam friend requests do you get a day? must be like alot!
