Dropbox is Sweet

I just started using Dropbox. I know a lot of people use it already – but I’m going to convert those who don’t with this post.

You sign up to Dropbox and download the tool, then it creates a folder in Documents called “My Dropbox”. Any files you put in there are automatically uploaded to their site.

If you install DropBox on another computer and sign in with your account, those files are automatically downloaded. That’s cool, but it isn’t what I use it for.

Inside “My Dropbox” it has a folder called “Public”.

If you put files in here they’re accessible to the public via a URL. I don’t think people can browse all your files in a directory, but they can access them if they know the address. This proves to be pretty useful.

Say that you want to upload a picture so that you can post it on the forums or wherever. All you have to do is save it in this folder. Then it’s then automatically uploaded to Dropbox. Then all you have to do is right click in the picture..

And you’ve got the URL of the picture in your clipboard.

This saves me a lot of time. When I wanted to post a picture from photoshop before I’d have to save it somewhere on my hard drive, go to filesmelt or imageshack etc, browse and find the file, upload and copy the URL. Now it’s just like linking people to files on my hard drive.

By the way, it isn’t just pictures, it’ll take any file want to link people to.

There’s a lot of other stuff that I have no cause to use. You can share a folder with someone so they can access your files etc.

Long story short, it’s kewl.

I use Microsoft Live Mesh. It is basically the same except Mesh got bigger online storage (At least it used to have) and you can share folders with other users. I don’t think Mesh supports the public linking though.

Anthoni: Dropbox and SVN have completely different purposes. If you delete a file on Dropbox, it’s GONE. Forever. I hope you kept backups.

If you delete a file on SVN and commit, just roll back to get the file back. There’s also no way to tell who edited a file on Dropbox or what changes they made.

For my own image uploading, I use a custom-made app that sits in my tray. When I double click it, it overlays the screen, I click and drag to select a region, and it captures, names, saves, and uploads the image to my website automatically. Right clicking the icon exposes additional capture modes (recapture last area, click on window to capture, capture desktop, monitor, color pick to clipboard, etc).

I used to use Dropbox as a sort of cheap backup solution for some of my .NET and website stuff, although I had to make extra copies of everything locally since I didn’t want to backup useless files like user settings. I may use it again.

Pretty useful if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch,

I prefer ZScreen. I have it set to FTP the images to my site.

It also has all the features The MAZZTer was talking about on his Custom app. Except better.

And for files, I just use FireFTP.

I have been using Dropbox for about A year now and for lack of a better word its awesome! I use it to sync all my PC game saves between my desktop and my laptop and to backup important data such as my KeePass files.

If you deleted a file by accident, then can dropbox restore it. If you do to their website, and choose the file browser, then there is a button called “Show Deleted Files”, find the file and click the arrow to the right, and click undelete. Then the file is restored and redownloaded to your computer. But you are unable to restore files who were deleted over a month ago.

I used to use Rightload ( http://rightload.org/ ) for this purpose. You just rightclick any file on your harddrive, click on the rightload button and it uploads it to any hosting site you want (it uses plugins for the sites). There are ready-to-use plugins for imageshack, flickr, facebook, tinypic, rapidshare, megashare, etc etc. It works with any file, not only images and also supports FTP.

Now I bought a Mac, and that tiny piece of software is something I really miss, because it’s Windows only.

Live Mesh gives you 5 GB of space and does most of the same things (minus the public part), but you can put public stuff in skydrive, which gives you 25 GB of space. 30 GB online space is a lot imo.

That’s right. Subversion is a version control system, not a file sharing central. If all of SVN you’ve ever used is uploading and downloading files on a shared repository, then you are missing out on a lot of useful stuff.
