As you’ve noticed (judging from the comments) I’ve had a play with the theme again. As many people have noticed on the other sites I have power over, I have developed a CSS3 fetish.
If you’re running Internet Explorer you probably won’t see any difference. But if you’re using Firefox or Safari or Chrome, you’re probably seeing drop shadows, curved corners and glows everywhere.
Things that a couple of years ago would have required multiple levels of hacked CSS or (more commonly) images, can now be done in pure CSS. I used this a lot in the Fretta Contest page. The only images there are the screenshots and the background gradient.
Here’s the difference, first one is IE, second one is Chrome (might be best if you middle click on them and switch tabs to see the difference).
PS I just discovered Windows Live Writer :)
Hehe, IE really needs to be updated to support CSS3, i use chrome though.
I think the current page looks too blurry.
I hate IE with a passion. I never write that extra code for it. I just put in a piece of JS that say “Get Firefox, Chrome, Safari, or Opera” if someone is on IE.
@phil are you using chrome? It some times makes things look a bit blurry.
I’m on Firefox, and I hate IE As well.
Looks good here, things look…glow-ey.
I love these shadows.
Also, Windows Live Writer is AWESOME.
I find it kind of depressing that the best blog writer is free by Microsoft, after I got used to BlogJet.
Well Nark, maybe that’s a good project to start on. A free and open source blog writing app.
I can see shadows and crap, my browser passes the ACID 3 test with 100%, yet it can’t even display rounded corners.
Nice! CSS3 is very cool. I was messing around with it before the semester started but I never got to finish it.
It’s such a pain in the ass to do rounded corners without it, but they’re pretty much high fashion on the web right now.
http://ben.lefflerworld.com/protected/test/ <– basically what I had going but it's missing the search box and some other tweaks
Safari has the best Support for CSS3 thanks to Webkit currently, but also Firefox does it quite good (chrome has a problem displaying bigger rounded corners as it’s optimized to load fast instead of look good :/),
IE is something that is only needed for XP and older Windows for Windows Updates and for getting a better Browser, nothing more… (when i make a webpage i generally block the site and let them know with wich the Website looks best, personally i would say Firefox as it has a big addon archive and is supported by Google Gears which Opera and Safari aren’t yet)
Chrome uses webkit
and what about Opera?
@Garry Newman It does, but it’s definitely not the same as Safari. At least in windows. Last time I compared, Chrome was ugly as all get out, while Safari was just as pretty as Firefox. I’m sure they’ve updated something by now though.
I’m also noticing there’s no drop shadows in firefox in Ubuntu. Rounded corners look great though. Fucking browsers.
woah man too much bloom
@16 Chrome looks just fine from here, and with the latest beta it can compete with firefox due to its addon (Extension) support, it is also more stable (if one tab crashes the rest still works) and faster than firefox.

I’m using FF 3.5.5, and I see at least one obvious CSS error. The post date (below a commenter’s name) is aligned to the left side of the comment box and overlaps their avatars.
Dropshadows? I don’t see any. But I love the glow and the rounded edges. Google chrome refuses to work on my computer.

Seems a little broken for me.
Using FireFox 3.5.5
@Anthoni(#8): If there’s already free one available and apparently “it’s the best”, what could a yet another open source blog writing app bring to the table? Do remember that open source is always actually a minus which has to be offset with important features, be it something it does or if it’s just stabler than others.
If I wanted to see CSS shit… I’ll go view some stupid girls myspace page.
I’m gonna view Garry’s Blog in IE now where it’s nice and fast and easy to scroll. (Note, I dont actually use IE, I use FF but I just cant stand CSS).
You don’t know what CSS is
I’m using Firefox but i can’t see any of the glows etc.
Stefan, your an idiot.
Oh no, I’m being called an idiot on the internet!
I know what CSS is, but it’s just a case of this new style that you’re using is slow to scroll with and because IE doesn’t render the style, no slowdown within the browser. I should view it in Opera next…
First Off, IE does not support W3C standards, and it uses an Old Layout Engine. Second, if the site is running slow on any other browser, either your computer is crap, or you have a virus. Also, your still an idiot.
How old does your computer have to be so that CSS slows it down?
@darkling – Light coloured shadow = glow
@Stefan – What Anthoni said
@Anthoni – Trident isn’t old, it’s just that Microsoft hasn’t bothered to add support for newer stuff and improve standards compliancy.
Anyway, for rabid IE fanboys (do they actually exist?) you can drool over something coming soon http://www.istartedsomething.com/20091119/internet-explorer-9-a-free-upgrade-for-the-web/
Bloody hell Anthoni flame me or what???
I know IE doesn’t support the latest standards, as I said, it doesn’t render the style… Geez
Also, dont assume anything Anthoni, my computer is fast nor do I have viruses or malware
I’ve looked at the blog in Opera 10.10, very smooth and clean but no rounded edges however in Opera Mobile the text is beautiful but no rounded edges again (same engine anyway).
I think that its just firefox being crap, since the last update it has been rather slow anyway.
Oh on another note Anthoni, it’s “You’re an idiot”.
Opera’s new Engine Presto 2.3 does Support rounded corners, too bad that it’s not used yet (current Opera Version uses Presto 2.2)
If nothing is wrong with your computer and it is fast, then it shouldn’t be slow at all. You should have no problems at all view CSS because it really does affect you, unless you just don’t like thinks looking good, which would make your quite strange. Also, thank you. You’re* still an idiot.
I think Anthoni and Stefan should stop arguing, and Stefan you sounded like you don’t know what CSS is by your first comment.
Anyway, I like the new look Garry, except I’m seeing what 21 mentioned. Otherwise, it’s awesome!
@Stefan You still do not know what CSS is. Pride be the death of you.
Wasn’t this supposed to be about the looks of the new style instead of a flame war? Who gives a damn if one doesn’t know what a cascading style sheet is? Back on topic, I find the new style pretty sweet (Viewing in Chrome :D)
Thanks minikori, I must admit looking at my first comment, it does sound very poor at me, I was just reminded back in the days when I had a myspace of the very poor use of CSS not only to use fancy styles but also to try and hide everything.
Also I’d like to say sorry to Garry and other blog readers for seeing a stupid argument. (I hope Anthoni will say the same too).
I have no regrets, but I do commend you for that little bit right there.
Anthoni you twat, IE8 does support standards (anyone using older versions is, once again, a twat) and in fact Microsoft has made about two thirds of the official compatability tests available for both CSS and XHTML support. Granted IE8 doesn’t support CSS3 and HTML5 but that’s why they’re working on IE9.
Firefox’ layout engine actually does break nowadays more often, however people have accustomed to expect it to be the “right” one so they assume it’s everyone else’s fault when Firefox breaks down.
Jeez peon, do you really have to start up the flame war again? Just drop it, and say something about the new looks and not about the damn IE8 or Microsoft.
Now you just need to fix the dates being miss-aligned in Firefox and you’re away.
Nice sharing:)
