I forgot to post this blog, so thanks to the naggers in the comments for reminding me. For those that don’t know what this is – GMod was on sale a week or two ago. It was half price. So here’s how it went.

The guys at Valve sent me an email at the end of the sale with all the stats and graphs and stuff. It was pretty cool, and has made this blog post a lot easier to write since now I don’t have to go and work it all out for myself.

The 8 days before the sale GMod sold 2,975 units, in the 8 days during the sale GMod sold 34,927 units. Because it was 50% off, we kind of needed at least a 200% rise in sales for it to justifty itself.. The actual rise was 1074%.

Here’s one of the pretty graphs that Valve sent.

    Nice to see that the game still sells fucking good :)

  2. appox says:

    Leave it at 50% off then if it generates more profit.

  3. Ali says:

    Firstly appox don’t be a businessman. Secondly congrats Garry, £174,635 in a few days isn’t bad work, though i’m not sure how much you get from that.

  4. Oscar_SP says:

    That is FUCKING incredible.

  5. johncox88 says:

    selling like sandbox cakes!

    Nice extra bit of pocket money there.

  6. sean says:

    Holy shit!

  7. Murk says:

    So that’s about 390k units sold

  8. RavMahov says:

    I see you had really good 8 days ;)

  9. Modern_Messiah says:

    You’re a dick garry :(

  10. Smurfy says:

    @appox It’s only made such a profit because of the timed element – see the big spike towards the end of the sale? People going “Oh it ends tomorrow, better grab it!”

  11. TomerA says:

    Smurfy – learn to read graphs…now look at it again and try figure out where you’re wrong.

    What impressed me the most is the fact that this week is responsible to 9% of the total Gmod sales, while it was only 0.78% of the total time that gmod is being sold.
    nicely done.

  12. Jovan says:

    Well, now you know how to make money..

    Big updates and 50% sales. :)

  13. Chich says:

    appox, people think “Oh lol I’ll just wait until that game goes on sale, what a deal.”
    But if Garry left it at 50% then it wouldn’t be special and there would be no need to rush to buy it.
    It’s all about pressure :).
    And grats Garry but please, please, please… now that you have a bigger player base, test your fucking update script because sometimes it is so bad that Garrysmod doesn’t run :/

  14. smfE says:

    richie rich garry ! How many have units have you sold OVERALL then since the 11/29/2006 release where i bought my copy?

  15. Moulde says:

    Thats just awesome! :D

    But whats with all the small spikes in the top graph?

  16. Laziest programmer says:

    KA-CHING! $:)

    Damn that’s impressive.

    PS was sale your or Valve’s idea?

  17. HyperKUltra says:

    Cha-Cheeng.

  18. Deco says:

    Whoop… prepare for an influx of new players [read: noobs] as they discover multiplayer.

  19. Kiddo says:

    ITS SHOPPED, BIATCH!!

  20. Legend286 says:

    Make the sales more frequent, maybe one ever quarter.

  21. Effektiv says:

    That means there’s gunna be ALOT of people were gunna have to be prepared for. Although its good, its not the best of time in the gmod community for alot of people to be joining new.

  22. Phyxius says:

    Grats Garry!

  23. Dean says:

    You called me a nagger.

    Racist.

  24. Overv says:

    Nicely done, that’s a total of about 1,9 million dollars for you, Garry.

  25. Effektiv says:

    Probs why you stopped torrents, this is great for us because it means your gunna fix things…right?

  26. Bredirish123 says:

    Nice looking graph. Valve just perfects everything.

  27. dgg says:

    Oh holy shit! That’s incredible. Sales record and almost 1/10th of your current sales. 5% of your total Gmod income in one week. Damn.

  28. earthHunter says:

    Moulde: The small spikes are there because people are more likely to buy the game on a weekend. Notice that there are two spikes for each labelled point on the graph. Every second week is labelled.

  29. Maurice says:

    You needed a 100% _RISE_ in sales, not 200. :eng101:

  30. Smurfy says:

    Garry uses money as toilet paper.

    And he uses toilet paper as money.

    FACT

  31. Bengley says:

    You made £87,000 in eight days. Fucking jesus christ almighty.

    Son of a bitch likes to cheat on your fretta server in the gamemode Suicide Barrels. he shoots through walls and shitz D:

  33. WiPa says:

    How can the game still have constant sales?
    It’s been out ages!

    :O

  34. Scott says:

    That’s awesome, imagine if you gave it away for free man.

  35. Andrew says:

    I thought you would have access to Steamworks garry and be able to see these stats directly? Or is that something else.

  36. supa_mario says:

    Wow lots of cheapskates on steam

  37. UncleJimmema says:

    So you made $87,000 on that sale?

  38. Bigbadbarron says:

    I have always wondored how much you actually make in profit off of one cop of gmod?

  39. Bengley says:

    Correction: Garry made about £54,486 ($87,112)

  40. Robber says:

    200% increase?
    Let’s say you usually sell 5 copies and get 5$ each. Now you sell 100% more (10 copies) and get 2.50$ each. Both are 25$. 100% increase in sales already justifies the sale.

  41. Rhaveb says:

    Garry newman owns :D

  42. pipodebeuker says:

    Maybe it’s because i’m Dutch, but isn’t it a bit of a stupid question to ask how much money someone makes ?

    I know it’s interesting to know about salesfigures and such, but personally I think 99% of the people here just want to know the contents of Garry’s wallet.

    Funny enough, those are probably the people that had their parents buy a copy of Gmod for them. No pun intended here.

    Yeah i said “Probably” ..

    anyways, congrats Garry, I like boats incase you’re wondering what to buy me ;)

  43. Moulde says:

    @earthHunter
    Ahhh, ofc :) Thanks

  44. Ali says:

    GARRY are you planning having another Q+A session anytime soon? I always find those fascinating to hear from a successful indie dev. Very interesting for a game designer like meself.

  45. hum4n says:

    so, that’s almost two million dollars total Garry.

    Shouldn’t you be retiring on your wise investment choices?

  46. FPtje says:

    2975 units is already much, if you get 5$ per sale.
    2975 * 10.74 is about 31950
    31950 times 2.5$…
    holy shit Garry just got 79,878$ richer if my calculations are right.

  47. Alex says:

    You, sir, are one rich person.

  48. Benny says:

    God damn. i would kill to have your life

  49. Davee says:

    Very nice, you should continue doing sales now and then ;)

    Also guys, remember that Valve/Steam gets some of the money. Was it 50%? I think I read that on a previous blog post.

  50. Lupo says:

    Yeah.
    I always thought that 10€ for a mod is too much so i also took the chance to got gmod for half the price… and in believe MANY MORE thought exactly the same.

    Hope that you continue selling gmod for 5 bucks.

    BTW: Only thing that bugs me is that its very unclear for a noob how to install addons or gamemodes the correct way… i wont call me a noob but it took me 3 retries until i finally got Wired and phx instlled and working!
    The svn tutorial has some mistakes in it!
    Maybe that should be reviewed asap.

  51. jister says:

    i bought it 50% sale, payed something like 5€
    so thats a nice ca. 174635€ in one week…
    i wouldn”t complain either if i where garry…
    curious how much you got from tha amount ;)

  52. [...] Mod Sale Stats Garry has released the sales figures for his mod-turned-retail ‘Garry’s [...]

  53. Anonymous Coward says:

    That many sales and still no linux server…

  54. DelaZ says:

    According to this newspost (http://www.garry.tv/?p=327) Garry gets 50% of the income.

    9 % of the sales = 34927 units
    -> 1 % of the sales = (34927 / 9) = 3880 units
    -> 91 % of the sales = (3880 * 91) = 353080 units
    -> 100 % of the sales = (3880 * 100) = 388000 units

    91 % of the units where sold at $ 9.99.
    -> 50 % of $ 9.99 = $ 4.99 (income per sale for Garry)
    -> $ 4.99 * 353080 units (91 %) = $ 1,761,869

    +

    9 % of the units where sold at $ 4.99.
    -> 50 % of $ 4.99 = $ 2.49 (income per sale for Garry)
    -> $ 2.49 * 34927 units (9 %) = $ 86,968

    = $ 1,848,837 (income for Garry) for 388000 units sold!

  55. idont remember says:

    Cool to see the patterns, bump in sales during Christmas etc.
