Ok, so that’s a month of torrents over. We’re now on direct downloads. Which should be lovely and fast for everyone.

With torrents we’ve used just over 8,500 GB of bandwidth. Not that much different from using coblitz really.

This month’s should be right up there. No Torrents, No Coblitz. Just straight from Amazon S3. Have fun!

It wasn’t that bad with torrents. I’d be quite happy with it the way it was.

Hmmm, I think it caused a similar bandwidth because we all had to get the files for the first time, I seeded over 50gb (with around 2gb downloaded) so there must’ve been less bandwidth used.

What I liked about the torrents was that you got decent download speeds :(

I second the opinion on having an option to use torrents or direct downloads, or would that just make it too complicated? I think the best thing about garrysmod.org is the simplicity of it all; but one can’t help but think it might be too simple.

This is great for me. I used to download from coblitz at 300 kb/s or around there, and with torrents it was like 45-200 kb/s.

Ewww :(. I liked torrents better they it was easier to manage and it was faster, now using a download manager with 12 connections it only downloads at 660 KB/s where as torrents were maxing out my download connection at 2.5MB/s

The only way to get ISPs to stop throttling / blocking them is to have legit uses and complain like all hell. Any ISP blocking these has to be pretty retarded anyway.

Since torrents are broken up and sent in signed packages, instead of downloading a 200MB file 7 times to get a good copy, I might loose a few MB to corrupt sections. This is ok for every one not liking torrents but what about the people over seas i live in Australia and with Direct Download its just way slow 20kbs with torrents i was getting 500kbs and some times 800kbs. Can you put a Torrent option for people to make a choice.

I’m getting annoyed by these people complaining about the slow DL speed and corrupted files. I’ve NEVER downloaded a corrupted file from Direct Download, and it has hardly ever been slow. Half the time the torrents were slower.

Occasionally coblitz is even faster.

You should really consider adding torrents and coblitz as an option. Everyone should be more or less happy after that.

Having both options destroy the point of using less bandwidth. People complain that torrents are too slow but when you download from more than one person, its faster! Im gonna miss torrents.

I was looking at Amazon S3 (who I believe is the current server), they say that they support torrents, and all Garry needs to do to provide people with a “.torrent” file is add “?torrent” to what would normally be a direct download request. Now the question is, if it is so simple why hasn't it been done yet? For the hell of it, guesses: Bittorrent functionality was added after Garry signed up and he hasn't noticed, Garry might be using an API that can't ask Amazon S3 for torrents, Garry's mind is too complicated to understand…
