The video for Portal (Free game with HL2:Episode 2) was released.. Here’s it is!
I met a couple of guys from the Portal team when I was over there – they’re normal guys! I dunno what I expected. Infallible code robots like Carmack I guess.
It’s hard for non programmers to appreciate how much of a bitch Portal must have been to create. The first thing you think of is the visual stuff, looking through the portal and seeing yourself.. ok yeah kinda hard, bit of maths etc.
Then you think of taking physics objects through there with you.. and colliding with the wall.. or colliding with the wall on the other side.. or not colliding with stuff on the other side.
Natural Selection just posted some new details on NS:S – then the HL2 sites jumped all over it and quoted the $19.95 part in bold and started the drama storm. This bought out the “my parents are poor we only have two cars” kids so they could post about how all mods should be free and how another mod sold out and the mod community is dying because the mods all sold out.
HEY MAYBE IF THE MODS RELEASED SOMETHING INSTEAD OF SPENDING 2 YEARS MAKING MAPS AND MODELS FOR A DOOMED TIRED CS CLONE WE’D GET SOME MODS!
I totally agree that making a mod with the intention of selling it is a dumb idea.. unless you have some awesome concept that will knock someone’s brain off. NS has been free and has proven that it can be and is popular.
Maybe these kids live in some kind of fairyland where food, clothes and plasma screen tv’s are free and everyone spends all day on the internet coding so that ungrateful spoilt 12 year olds can e-mail you and spit in right back into your face.
I guess they’re just the minority and the majority of you know the score and realize that if NS:S wasn’t being made then Charlie would just be working in a second hand shop or whatever and you’d all get nothing.
I met Charlie when I was over there too by the way. He’s a cool guy, you should definitely give him your money.
So yeah, the Facepunch Forum got its a couple of days back. We have more posts than any of the main HL2 sites out there now. Fuck. How did that happen? It’s like punching a dog in the face and he keeps coming back even stronger and biting your fist.

Wow, I guess all those complainers must be extremely annoying as fuck, considering you’ve given us 2 years with this mod, working for nothing. Yet now, because you’ve been given an offer you can’t refuse, these spoilt shits are complaining because you’re getting the chance to get something more from what you’ve put your life into. You deserve the chance to sell Gmod, like Outerlight did with The Ship, like what Black Cat gaming are doing with Alien Swarm: Infection. Team Garry deserves to sell Gmod.
Well said, some days I just want to trace the IP of the ill-grammered complaining little shits that live off of our creations and find out where they live. It would actually feel good to fly over to where they live, ring the door bell and whoo hoo, little jimmy shitfuck answers the door and gets a face full of fist. If you are reffering to my website as having it in bold (I checked a few other sites and didn’t see bolds), I actually didn’t even mention the price and I only used bolds because I wanted it to stand out from the list of other small news bits I included it in. Nothing indicated a negative reaction on my part (and for the record I favorably reviewed The Ship recently), I was simply informing people of a certain big (for that project) change of direction. Informing people is what I do.

And as for mods for sale. I have absolutely no problem with it, assuming they actually start out as mods. Basically put they offer a level of try before you buy that you simply cannot attain with typical retail channels. I believe dispite the smaller resources that may be afforded to a ‘mod’ team, the likely-hood imo is that the overall quality of the game would easily rival any typical retail effort. Having tried a few other AAA title games, such as UT2k4, CnC Generals, Dawn of War, Doom3, compared to the enjoyment iv had from playing games like DoD, CS, gmod and NS, even Battlefields … the so-called other AAA titles leave me feeling rather underwhelmed.
So i have no problem rewarding valve for their investment in steam and source, which im sure is a large undertaking of risk. And i have no problem rewarding mod teams that can offer enjoyment.
Wow… imagine the gamemode possibitlities for gmod when portal is released. (Or which ever game comes out with it first)

THe portals do indeed remind me of Prey (I agree, very fun game). I love how the portals are created with the gun though, so unique! I loved the part where the guy flew up, shot a portal, and you could see the new location on the old one on the ground.
Looks very fun, makes Episode 2 even more worth the money (although I will most certainly not be buying via Steam this time if its $10 at my local shop again ).

You guys must see the TF2-Trailer. Unfortunately, it does not show actual gameplay-scenes but introduces all the classes and that “The Incredibles”-Look.
You can be 100% assured I’ll be buying Gmod 10, with you all the way. Portals looks great, breath of fresh air to have a purely puzzle based FPS.

I agree that Garry likely doesn’t want to have to code it, but given the amount of thankless work he’s put into Gmod already, I bet he wants to put portals in pretty badly. I mean, he wanted to put SWEPs in. He wanted to put winches, hydraulics, thrusters and magnets in. You KNOW he wants to put portals in, no matter how big and ugly a bitch it would be.

First of all, I would like to thank the guys that made portal….It must of taken some painsteaking work to create.
Also, from what you can see in the video, Portal must require some intense and quick thinking if you want to get through some of those levels. It looks a bit more like a puzzle game (I think I can see some sort of new gamemode for Gmod if the portal gun etc is put into it ^^)
Lastly, who cares about those people who whine when mods are being sold apart from when they start posting on forums etc. I dont exactly have much money but I usually somehow manage to kick up $15 for World Of Warcraft every month then pay for other bits and pieces. If you guys are so poor, go cancel your internet for a year and save up the money you would usually pay to get a better connection AND Gmod10, Or you could just penny-pick and take loose change hanging about the house.

Oh, and yah, Prey amazed me when it came out with those portals, but it did not really do much with them.
PORTAL on the other hand seems to use them to almost their fullest potential, includes physics witch interact with the portals, and finally, there is some realistic motion blur!
BTW, who says that the game is just a puzzle game? There will be more videos for Portal soon, and that just seemed like training? Remember the HEV Suit training for HL1? Well, that video could just be the beginning!
Also, I like that they blurred the gun,it makes it more realistic in that you would be focusing away from it and looking at what is in front of you instead.

There is a in-progress LUA script for GMod 9, but of course it’s not really any good from the videos I’ve seen (you can see through and go through only one way, you get teleported through, objects can’t go through, portals are too small, etc). Not sure if it can be done with LUA in GMod 10 either, in which case the only way it could be done is through coding it in the DLL (it’d be easy if the source gets released in the Source SDK…).
