I changed garrysmod.org to use torrents this morning. Let me explain how this worked before torrents, and how it works now.
Before Torrents
• User uploads zip file
• If zip file contains bad files, it’s rejected
• File is uploaded to Amazon’s S3 service
• When file is downloaded, it’s downloaded from S3 or from coblitz (a free file mirroring service)
Problem: CoBlitz is too slow for some people. Too expensive without coblitz.
After Torrents
• User uploads zip file
• If zip file contains bad files, it’s rejected
• File is uploaded to Amazon’s S3 service
• When file is downloaded, user downloads torrent of zip file.
• Torrent is seeded by Amazon S3 and other downloaders
Problem: Users are idiots
The Problem
I never realised how scared of torrents people are. I mean, even people who seem to know what they’re doing with computers. Here’s some quotes. Bear in mind that this is after I explained that FILES ARE SEEDED BY THE SERVERS!
What happens if no one seed’s?
What if a great file die’s
noooo why torrents!?!!! i hate them cause some downloads could not work and some times your computer wont work (i guess so),dammit!!
Thanks, but… what about people who don’t use torrents or who are mistrusting torrents in general? It’s like deleting links here because of Rapidshare uploads. Rapidshare = warez. Although that’s not always true. But Bittorrent is just the same for me. I won’t use torrents, sorry. Period.
This is fucking dumb, sorry. I tried to download something yesterday (It said over 1000 leechers) and it downloaded at an awesome 1.5kb/s. [this wasn't on yesterday!?]
torrents are the most abused service one can think of. And I’m not risking any trouble just because of downloading from a torrent, even if it’s a legal file. I’m too wary of it.
Thanks for ruining the fun of getting new addons by NOT SVN.
Torrents are about the worst way to download/share things. I seriously would rather Fileplanet, gamershell, or any other form of download. I have received trojan alerts/warning when I download completely legal torrent files from reliable locations. I do not trust torrents in any way for my own reasons.
NO.NO.NOOOO.
WHY TORRENTS? I’ve downloaded to many torrents as it is and will have my ISP up my ass watching me for awhile now.
Man,i´can´t download anything unless someone seeds it…THAT SUCKS!Why not keep the old garrysmod.org?
*Sigh* Garry the normal one was a good one but…. ugh.. sorry but torrents just makes my download speed alot lower..
But.. try to make it better… ill try to download some stuff… oh and even for a 200mb it takes like 5 weeks or maybe 1 year to me…
this sucks why all must download from bitorent why did you that garry?!!!
This is bullshit! Seriously, I just want a simple DL and install, every torrent I ever used has never, EVER loaded on me. If it did, it takes about a few months
i really dont like torrents they take ages nd wen its the old garrysmod.org it takes not even 5 seconds to download a map or addon i think it should be changed back like rite now
the thing is know one will seed and link packs wont be perm
What about people with bandwidth limits. Since Torrents are usualy both ways, you download, but you also upload…
Well files from a normal webserver are safer then torrents, since there are way to many points a virus could infect the file and a webserver only has 2 => The uploader and the Server.
It just depends on the people/servers who are seeding it for torrents, the more seeders = the less safe they become…
this is VERY stupid, some ppl can’t download torrents, some torrents won’t be seeded, some will be ultra slow, and the idea of putting 50000+ files on torrents is generally a waste
I can’t even get a freaking map without a torrent.
Seriously, my first attempt at bit torrent installation failed, I’m on my second try. Thats if BT let me use them altogether!
,man i hate using torrents now i cant download anything thanks garry
One massive problem with torrents: NOBODY SEEDS THEM. Or, at least, nobody here seeds them.
EDIT: *download complete* Holy crap…there must have been some sort of glitch, as there are 0(96) seeds…
this is a MOTHER FUCKING CRAPPY THING TO DO I CANT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING CAUSE IT LAGGGS ALOT WHEN IM DOWNLOADING STUFF ITS LIKE A VIRUS MY INTERNET DOSNT WORK WITH IT ITS JUST SHIT SO GET RID OF IT THE WEBSITE WAS FINE WITHOUT IT I DONT EVEN NO HOEW TO EXTRACK FILES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is bullshit i absolutely hate torrents it would be nice to have the option of choosing a .zip or a torrent so those of us who dont like torrents can still download
Oh my god i hate this fucking shit.
Atleast if you do torrent make an normal download below there too.
THIS IS SO ANNYONYNG, *Quitting Garry’s Mod*
This is the worst mistake you ever made, Garry.
Oh boy.
So what
This will stay like this for a month, then we’ll re-evaulate the situation. I do agree that the extra step of opening it in a torrent program is more bullshit than it’s probably worth, but if this is going to cost jack shit compared to the old way (which tbh I doubt it will) – then I’ve got to seriously consider switching to it permanently.. and maybe ya’ll will be used to it by then?
It seems to work fine, which is good enough for me.
When I went to download a map off of gmod.org I was wondering why it tried to download with uTorrent! However I DID download a 40 mb file in about 20 seconds so it’s much faster! A lot of people will probably whine like you said about the torrents though. Oh well
Torrents are great. People who are scared of them are probably 13 year olds who don’t want to get in trouble with their parents when they accidently download a virus on their home computer (which they think will happen with torrents, since they have no idea what they are talking about)
I just don’t want to download a torrent program. Too lazy after removing BitTorrent for the umpteenth time.
This is great. Everything is faster, and it keeps the downloaded files in a common directory.
I like the new idea of torrents, but we’ll see what all the others out there have to say about it.
Ps: I never had problems with DL speed, since it was always around 3Mbit.
This is amazing. I love you. Speed increases across the board.
Torrents are a great idea. They make the download speed faster. The ONLY downside is you must have a torrent program installed on your computer.
I recommend not removing it and posting a sticky with some unbeatable common sense logic in it, then link spamming any people who complain to that thread. :)
Just make sure to make an normal download too. Haha.
It’s funny how people can get “virus” from a torrent file. A torrentfile is nothing different to a textfile containing a bit of checksums and links to the announcers. Also Torrent as is, is nothing illegal… torrents root was to share files without the need of a crazy-fast-crazy-big server in the background.
Good job, i think this is a very good idea.
loooooooooooool torrowned!
my favourite is that guy with the “!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! “
Great idea, but don’t forget that Garrys Mod is mostly full of little kids who couldn’t change their windows theme if they wanted to.
I’m ok with the Torrents, no complaint from me.
Working great so far for me. It’s a good idea, people need to just quit bitching and get used to the change.
Bunch of retards @ torrent complainers.
Awesome choice, Garry. People sure are retarded.
I just tried downloading a popular file and I’m getting near 1Mb/s which is so so so so /so/ much better than before!
Why didn’t you do this sooner :P
This was indeed a good idea. Finally downloaders help other downloaders.
Also, you might tell people to use a good torrent client such as µTorrent on garrysmod.org. I’ve been stuck with a shitty torrent-program before (shareaza) where my torrents did never really start or became fast. Then I tried µTorrent with the same torrent-files and it was like WOAH, 20 times faster.
I think it’s a great idea, and for example if you have lots of mods, you can just keep the .torrent files somewhere and always download them again, plus most of the popular stuff will probably get tons of seeds so downloading them should be pretty damn fast.
People just don’t like change, especially ignorant people. Works fine, good idea tbh.
A lot of big companies want for nothing more than torrents to be illegal, and their efforts to prevent it from reaching a proper standardization or integration appears to have paid off. Your responses indicate that well enough.
This battle may have been lost before you even started, I’m afraid. But feel free to prove me wrong.
The problem is that some ISPs (like mine) throttle torrents, even legal ones. Right now, I can’t get past 60 kb/s, much slower than if it were directly hosted.
Maybe for the people who don’t want to have to download a Bittorrent client, include a link to (for example) BitLet, which lets you download torrents in your browser. Uses Java I think.
Good choice garry, good choice.
@Banjo and anyone else who doesn’t understand throttling.
Use an encrypted connection and change your port. ISPs can’t throttle Bittorrent traffic if they don’t know it’s Bittorrent.
I don’t like torrents either but that’s just because I don’t like it because it’s used for illegal activates.
Yep, the biggest mistake some people make is to overestimate the competence of their customers. I just hope the idiots don’t outnumber the sane people so the website can stay this way, if only to troll the ignorant prepubescents.
@Banjo
Your ISP is as stupid as the rest of the people who complained above. Lol.
It’s like outlawing busses only because they allow more people to ride in them at the same time. :)
@arienh4
Great idea. Post a link to that both here and on the facepunch thread and on gmod.org.
@arienh4
I am using encryption and a random port. It’s still throttled.
I don’t mind torrents that much, but i do prefer a direct link.
Perhaps have a Coblitz button and a torrent button?
you could use bitlet at http://www.bitlet.org which allows you to download torrents through a website without a client!!!!
It’s pretty easy to use, just click on the download button, open up with your favorite torrent software and you’re on the way to download the file. I really like to download this way, and as Erika mentioned before, just save the torrent files, give them to your friends and they gonna have the same addons in no time.
Personally, I give you 2000x thumbs up!
This is innovative and a smart way to solve the issue, probably will be more expensive than Coblitz, but well, the not so popular files will be expensive while the popular will be cheap for you, but this you allready know.
@Joshua
I don’t like the internet either, but that’s just because I don’t like it because it’s used for illegal activities.
What an amazing display of reasoning skills! Are you from Tennessee?
Well here’s my thoughts/suggestions.
You don’t normally upload torrent files unless it’s something huge or extremely rare.
This is really just a bad idea in general..
Sure, it’s free, it’s “quicker”, but the community is more interested and demanding of a file transfer service that you can just point, click, save.
Torrents will weed out the nublets who have no patience, sure, but in the long run it’s just going to slow down the process in which users find files they like.
Maybe provide a dual option? If both system choices are free, why not offer both? Sure, you’ll need a tiny site update to include the 2 links in a sexy format, but other than that… people love options. Being restricted to something new and “frightening” is not what the Gmod community needs.
We’ve had enough viruses and bugs in the past, don’t choose another way to slow things down. :\
I agree with Avon.
Recommend µTorrent, its small, lightweight, and the install and program exe’s are both around 250kb big.
I don’t understand why people complain over torrents, either they dont understand the technical concept, or doesn’t know how to setup their ports, or just plainly ignorant.
Way to go Garry, I hope you will NOT switch back.
Garry, I feel sorry that you have to deal with this.
@The froobs out there: If you’ve ever played WoW, you’ve used torrents, there’s also a good chance you have if you ever downloaded Insurgency and a few other good games/mods. Torrents are no more illegal than direct downloads.
Garry, don’t listen to all the people bitching. Torrents are the way to go. If they want to seed, they’ll seed and everyone has the files. If they’re gonna be douche bags and just leech, no files for anyone. And less stress on your servers. It’s the only way to go nowadays.
Just made a testdownload
150megs @ 2mbyte per second. Simply put: Awesome
People should learn to forward ports…. Idiots xDDD
I like it that way!
I think it’s safe to say that you know better for your users than most of your users do. On a side note, I thought BitTorrent was one of the things Amazon charged for on S3? Is it just cheaper because others should be seeding too?
@Joshua
Crumbs, well, if you have to stop using everything that could possibly used for illegal activities, then you’re going to have to stop using a lot of things, including but not limited to:
Knives (can stab people)
Cars (can be used to run people over)
Planes (can be flown into buildings)
Water (can be used to drown/waterboard people)
Computers (may be used for piracy)
etc. etc.
The only legitimate complaint here is that some ISPs throttle torrents, usually the ISPs with such bad contention ratios that they can’t actually support their customers using the connections they’ve paid for.
The complaints about torrents being less secure is one of the most ignorant. Each piece of torrent is SHA1 hashed to ensure its integrity. The only person you have to trust is the provider of the .torrent file, same as with any other download.
I’m getting ~800kb/s, so everything is awesome. One thing though, instead of using bittorrent you should encourage people to use Vuze or utorrent. Also, people who are having problems with the torrents probably haven’t set up their computers properly.
I’ve never actually used a torrent. This will be rather exciting, just like every other change to Garry’s Mod.
lol @ people who don’t know everything is hash checked when you download.
Still, there are valid concerns against torrents. Normal downloading is EASY. Torrents, however, require choosing and installing additional software (unless the person uses Opera, which most don’t). If some ISP blocks or throttles Bittorrent, which is not unheard of, they also need to reconfigure the port used. For someone who is not that good with computers (or someone who just thinks he is good with computers), that can be quite a job. It’s a lot of additional complexity just for downloading a few add-ons.
Its great… downloads are much faster. Seriesly lol
Nice one Garry, it works great. The only downside is for people on ISPs like mine (BT) that traffic shape torrents. Even with forced encryption I get slow speeds. That Bitlet looks useful to avoid that though.
It’s shit loads faster but I prefer normal downloads because I use IDM and it’s much easier keeping it all organized. Not that big of an issue.
Only thing that bothers me really is that now whenever I go on a sever as well as the usual retards asking where to download files they will ask how to download torrents too.
I am not complaining, but I prefer garrysmod.org as it used to be — mostly because you had the chance to download instantly and without any software. I don’t use torrents because they are not always legal and may contain viruses.
@21 .torrents are well standardized, and used for almost all community projects with large files eg. linux distros
bitlet is a good idea but it still required port forwarding. Personally I think everyone should just get utorrent, it doesn’t bloat up your system and it installs as a single exe.
But… oh nos i have to download and install something…Wait you have to do that to play any steam game anyway.
Of course people are going to complain, no matter what you do, people will complain.
As long as it’s faster, it’ll be better.
You can tell the people who are annoyed are ignorant on the matter.
Maybe, it would be a good idea to make a quick tutorial/faq on site, so people who have no idea, can get some quick info or help.
Oh cool I might actually download things now that it might just go faster than 30kb/s.
As aiusepi said:
“The complaints about torrents being less secure is one of the most ignorant. Each piece of torrent is SHA1 hashed to ensure its integrity. The only person you have to trust is the provider of the .torrent file, same as with any other download.”
My two sense:
The technology was invented to revolutionize the way file sharing is done. EVERYTHING we do on the internet is “file sharing” of some type… most people are confused by the media associating the term “file sharing” with piracy.
If you load up google, you’ve just SHARED FILES with google… if you download a map or addon off of the OLD garrysmod.org, you have just partaken in FILE SHARING!
BitTorrent is just a new way to share files with others thru the internet… the only reason it has such a bad rap is because of ISPs who are scared… scared because this new technology is SO efficient at doing what it does that some of them are unprepared to offer the infrastructure necessary for such speed.
If your ISP is throttling your bandwidth that YOU ARE PAYING FOR, don’t support them. Period, simple as that. Don’t give them your money, go somewhere else for your internet service, and let it be well known why you’re leaving and why what they are doing is unacceptable. Soon enough, they’ll either get the point and fix it or they’ll go out of business.
If your ISP is telling you that “your downloading too much piracy” or they’ve “flagged your account” then they’re PROBABLY RIGHT. Get a job and buy your media you filthy pirate! But they can’t do ANYTHING to you if everything you’re downloading is legitimate.
I had my ISP try to tell me I was “flagged” once… until I told them what Steam is and asked if they’d like to meet my lawyer. They apologized and the next day I had my full bandwidth back. If you’re not breaking the law then the law is on your side.
Anyone who is afraid of torrents because of “legal repercussions” is obviously a pirate with a guilty conscience and/or far too young and/or ignorant and/or gullible to understand what this “internet” thing is. My advice to you: watch less Fox news, learn how to think for yourself, and ignore the scare tactics of the mainstream media!
Awesome.
It’d be nice if people would just take a few minutes to read up on something before they bash the hell out of it. For anyone out there who’s complaining about the horrible speeds, or how it “infects their computer’s internet” and everything goes slow, it’s called bandwidth saturation, and if you limit your upload speeds just a LITTLE bit it’ll most likely not happen to you again.
NUUUUU DONT TORRENT THE WURLD WILL ESSPLODE!
This is LOADS faster, the only thing i dislike is that all my files are less organised now, but whatever, i barely download from garrysmod.org anyway.
I love torrents, I use hundreds of torrents a week. Any average computer user should know how to use them correctly and safely.
Torrents are a great idea, People don’t use them enough for legit reasons and thus are afraid it’s illegal to use torrents at all.
Anyways, This way popular files will be so fucking fast, great news.
Also, Is there still a size limit? I’m guessing there is as it has to be hosted on s3 first.
I just tried downloading something and it *STILL* went to coblitz.codeen.org, which fucking times out on me and I have to wait for it to time out to remove the coblitz and leave only the s3. So I have no idea what you’re talking about when you say there’s torrents, because I don’t see any.
I think torrents are good, and those who say it’s illegal, remember, it’s only illegal if the files are illegal. Little kids, grow up :/
how about you fix the ftp exploit now
There wouldnt be much of a problem if more internet browsers contained a torrent client, nice to see you’re always trying new things garry.
I foresee 2 legitimate problems:
1. People who will get their torrents throttled
2. People having to spend time setting up a torrent client and forwarding their ports correctly.
I’m not sure how surmountable the first one is, but for lazy users who don’t want to install a torrent client, I might suggest they check out a torrent extension for Firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10931?src=api
btw I’ve never used this addon because I use BitTorrent on a regular basis, but it probably works just fine for what these n00bs need.
Fuck em garry, they’re idiots.
Hey garry, you might want to think about using something like bitlet (http://www.bitlet.org/). It’s basically a java applet that is it’s own self-contained torrent app. I’m sure if you wanted to, you could ask them, and set up your own little version that’s nice and simple for the morons who think that ALL torrents are evil and will infect your computer.
LMAO some people are real idiots.
I wasn’t sure how the system was going to work when I first read it, but seeing that it’s seeded by S3 rather than just the uploader (which would have been stupid, seeing a lot of the content that gets repeated on it) makes me happy.
I do have one valid concern with the use of torrents. When using a conventional download only the server gets infomation which has the potentialy to track you (I am on a fixed IP). However with a torrent any seeder or tracker can identify your IP and other infomation and a myriad of infomation about you can be gained. Being a bit of a privacy nut I am unhappy with this system for there is no way of hiding your infomation from other parties for proxies and tor cannot be used with torrents.
If you’re finding the downloads slow then you have a crappy ISP who throttles the shit out of torrent downloads.
Solution: Boycott your shitty ISP and switch to a respectable one which doesn’t indiscriminately throttle torrent downloads.
Torrents might be a good idea. After all, they can get really fast if properly seeded.
The problem is that a lot of ISPs get anal about ANY sort of torrent downloading, even if it appears to be legit. I know for a fact my ISP has a tendency to send me nasty letters for using torrents (Mind you, the last torrent I used was indeed a legit one for a mod). There’s also bandwidth concerns to be had.
It’s a good step ahead, but it’s not the greatest. I’ll be sticking to filesmelt for uploading files from now on.
The problem for me is that my ISP blocks ALL bittorrent traffic regardless of what it is. This means that I get around 100 kb/s or less on torrents with 23 000 seeders.
It seems to work pretty great, i’m getting 1.5mbs to 2mbs on kermites smg pack.
If you get throttled, seriously, get a different ISP. Most of them haven’t any idea what they’re doing, and traffic shaping is just dumb. I’m downloading torrents at 2 MB/s.
Changing garrysmod.org to torrents is the right move. Less decentralized system for sharing large amount of files around the world is always better solution. And you can invest the saved money in something instead of wasting them to pay for ineffective bandwidth.
Anybody saying torrents shouldn’t be used because they are used for illegal activities: Maybe we shouldn’t use a direct download either. Look at all the waraz on rapidshare. You know what, let’s just never use computers, they can be used for piracy. While we’re at it, let’s stop using boats too.
I kinda laughed when I saw the thread.
So many ignorant people thinking they’re computer experts just because they play video-games.
Garry, if you read this I think it would be a suitable fix. Personally I use torrents for stuff all the time and have no problem with it. Anyway what if you coded a custom application that shipped with gmod called “Garrys Mod Files Downloader” or whatever you wanted, it could have a box where you can search for the torrent file and a inbuilt web browser (imo). Also, if you do deicide to do anything like this, maybe make the icon the gmod icon so it makes users feel safer if they have a gmod sign on the torrents. Anyway that’s just a suggestion, I know takes time, but it might be one of the only ways you can keep people downloading
Wait, are you seriously saying that torrents are a better method than direct download? Now, I love the insults in here about people’s intellectual level with computers, but seriously, the concept would be to make user interaction as _EASY_ as possible.
Horrid idea.
Intellectual problem: don’t expect widespread happiness with a greater difficulty in operation.
Don’t give me any bullshit about how “difficult” it is to install BitTorrent or any other related software, who gives a flying fuck?
For those who haven’t gotten the point yet:
The line of Windows operating systems have hundreds upon thousands of programs designed for them, yet because the end user doesn’t know about “x” amount of software, or “y” software in particular, shit ain’t gon’ sell ‘nigga.
tl;dr: The point is to make this shit easier for 9 year olds, not limit the game and it’s extension availability to those with a slightly larger amount of type-here, click-there knowledge.
Lemme just say wow…. to the people of all the comments in the thread, read a fucking wiki, you guys obviously have no fucking idea how torrents work.
Its only dangerous if the files itself are dangerous, and im pretty sure that all the files uploaded to the amazon and the file host servers are scanned with a decent scanner, and if they come back negative, then the torrent will get dropped.
Garry, good work, torrents are awesome!
Sam, I know the internet may be used for illegal ways, but there is I good side of it too, like torrents.
I’m fine with the internet because I have used it and I can’t be happy without it. Torrent I haven’t used before and a person I know uses them in illegal ways.
The reason I don’t that is because I believe I am lawful.
You did a good thing there garry, it’s just stupid people who have no idea what a file sharing protocol is.
@79
I just thought about something similar. Would make downloading and installing addons a lot easier.
I’m sure this would defeat the objective of switching to torrents, but why not give the option to download each file either the old fashioned way or as a torrent?
Though as I said I’m sure there’s some reason why you chose not to do this
Why not create a Mirroring Service where you can put in filefront & co links?
Like ive said, i would code/help code it…
Amazing! Now we can download faster and better (: Thanks Garry!
Here is what you can do to get the community on your side and the load off of your servers:
1. Add an achievement “Supersharer”, that the user gets when he uploads 1GB or something. (You can easily track those stats, and connect that to a webserver. I could do that, so I guess others could as well.)
2. Add the shareratio to the boards, right next to the avatar. It’s like an e-penis. Idiots love penis.
3. Include the client into Steam. Maybe add it into the game, add a new download or even talk to Valve. I think Valve would be happy to take some load off of their servers. But maybe this is a step too far.
What the fuck @ torrent-hating morons.
For big downloads like PHX/Wiremod or big maps this is perfect. Coblitz and S3 like to occasionally cut out on me. In a torrent download it doesn’t matter if the server cuts out because someone will be mirroring it.
Plus you don’t have the problem of corruption. If one piece is corrupted, you just re-download that 1Mb/64Kb fragment, and everything is fine.
I’ll do my part by contributing 128 measly kbps upstream to the swarm when I download stuff from garrysmod.org by torrent (:
Torrents for Garrysmod.org?
Awesome! Now I can actually get good speeds.
People who dislike the idea are technologically-and-mentally retarded people.
Just have a dual system, torrents for most of us, and a (slooww) direct download for those who can’t/won’t use them.
Authough people telling others to “get a different ISP” as if it is easy or even possible for everyone are idiots.
The only defence they have is that some ISPs could traffic shape certain ports commonly used by P2P apps (or people’s routers don’t like it and they can’t fix it themselves). Aside from that, torrents are a great idea. Maybe you should leave the free mirroring service up as an alternative.
Well personally, I love it. I tried to DL something on Gmod.org a few days ago, and I couldn’t, because I was getting 1.6 kb/s. Now with using uTorrent I downloaded it in just a few seconds.
Good move! This should stay for the greater good to get people to know BitTorrent and shake off the prejudices. Though I agree that it slows down things when you got an additional step to take to download something. Perhaps a simple custom client could take that extra step off by launching directly from URI links on the site and automatically download the stuff to a set location that you specify on the first time and optionally open the downloads directory when it’s done.
The torrent setup is great, I got amazing speed increases (going from a max of 20KBps to 200KBps)
And I didn’t leave it going long, it’d max out my connection soon enough.
Many people are scared of torrents because they only know them from sites like TPB, where they’re very slow, often not even downloading and often enough contaminated with viruses.
this is awesome 700kb/s :D i love you garry have my baby’s <3
why did you that garry?!!!
Garry!
You won’t think about people who has got a very bad provider with limited torrent speed (or fully closed torrent communication), like me. When I try to use torrent , I get this stupid “The communication port is closed by the provider. For further information, contact your provider and ask for opening the port.”… Now, that’s fucking not good… No, I’m not against torrent because it is a great way to download files with a high speed unlimited connection, and people can download things faster, but the providers noticed that those high-bandwidth connections are used by 14-30 year old people who are downloading illegal stuff like cracked games, cracked gmod, cracked stuff and movies, music, ripped stuff and so on… I’m not saying that everything is illegal on the P2P network, but 90% of them IS illegal… There were those server cleanings at piratebay and mininova: the two biggest torrent site, mostly with illegal content, but even MICROSOFT used them to seed their Windows 7 Betas…
And by the way anyone who can use a fucking text editor and can read and rewrite a fucking link(adding http:// and / after the s3.garrysmod.org part and then copying the files/…../…. . zip and making them into http://s3.garrysmod.org/files/…../…….zip) can make FTP connection to the server… So your method only made it a bit slower for me to get files…
Thank you garry! Its a lot faster this way. My old DL speeds were anywhere from 2Kbs to 200Kbs. Now it’s around 1-1.5 Mbs. The extra step that torrents introduce is annoying, but worth it for the faster DLs. A lot of people think BitTorrent itself is illegal, thats just because it’s how most folks pirate games and shit.
Torrents own. Good choice Garry!
Just keep it like that – ignore all the people that are idiots. My download speeds are better than ever.
The speed actually jumped from 2kbps to 300kbps!
Seems like a great idea to me.
Personally, I think torrents are for huge downloads with multiple files. For packs and 50mb+ files, yes, I think a torrent as well as an optional http download are the answer, torrents are going to be faster than http downloads, and everybody will still be able to download the file, including people who have ISPs who block torrent ports, or people who can’t (or don’t have authorization to) set up port forwarding.
I could download a 5mb, maybe even a 10mb file with Gman Mod Manager and have it automatically install in the time it would take me to start up my torrent client, open the 1mb torrent, find the seeds, connect to them, download the file, open the folder it was in and unzip the folder.
I rather have the normal downloads because it’s much easyer. When I start my program to download torrents it takes like 3 min to start up, by the time it start downloading, I could have downloaded it the normal way and been extracting it…
Hope you’ll change your mind,
Assassini you don’t think about other people… yes, you got a better download speed, but almost half of the gmod community can’t even download now from gmod.org…
Thanks for posting this, I laughed a lot. Good on you for choosing a good, and let’s face it, pretty mature technology to distribute usage away from your costly hosting.
There’s no point in me trolling those people who think that viruses are going to somehow defy hashing and hop into part of a torrent stream… I’d love to wind them up but there’s just no way they’re going to understand.
Keep up the good work :-)
Servers seed files MY ASS.
I wanted to download 3 files today , non of them had seeds.
And those who worked had slower speed then before.
Yes, not the viruses are who should be feared…
DtMech, try to use my method! The FTP link is on the bottom of the file, just search for s3.garrysmod.org!
can’t change isp? ha! what country do you come from? america’s 1950′s version of the ussr? ;) oh, maybe your mother is in control of “your” isp… way to go, torrents FTW. there are some proper nana’s out there, using torrents is so flipping easy it is depressing how many people are tripped up by it. GO GO GADGET SEEDERS.
glad I suggested this as it’s insanely faster now and as always garry never credits me.
Maybe incorporating a sort of packaging system for gmod that included a torrenting system would be the best way. This may help out some users that aren’t savvy with using bittorrent.
Meh, I know all these hater comments make you feel like shit, especially because you payed money to make a website where users get the addons they want (and their shit together), and then you get an inbox full of flame wars.
Just saying I don’t like torrents at all, but I just thought I shouldn’t make a big deal about it as in “I’m going to fkin Sue u fkr” or something along those lines.
would be very glad if the old download comes back :)
Hopefully the complainers will just get off their fat asses and download BitTorrent or similar.
And if it doesn’t work for you, try leaving the settings as default ‘stead of going in and changing everything cause you’re “leet ass enough to change the settings for no upload max download =D hurr hurr”
Files in a few seconds for me ^^
that sonded really angry actually whoops.
but do try and see why garry did this, to the people who refuse to budge…
K CAN U NAO FIX DA FTP EXPLOIT PLOX?
Retarded people are not retarded, they are amish..
Why not to use coblitz and torrents so people would be able to choose where to download from?
I doubt anyone will read this way down here but I’m willing to give it a shot and try to help these scrubs with their torrent problems.
Cheap routers are crap, they don’t have enough memory for all of the IP addresses that torrents usually use. This causes slowdowns because your cheap router has to constantly write to it’s RAM. And yes, Timmy. Your hundred dollar router is probably still a cheap one.
What needs to be done is decreasing the maximum number of connections to something sane. Try twenty. That should allow the router to properly handle every connection that comes it’s way.
I’ve killed a lot of routers before learning this, simply from being overworked. They are tiny computers after all.
Hope that helps someone.
This is amazing idea. Its great for the large mods and big files but a little annoying for the 5MB files but i like the new way thanks Garry
Garry. You are doing a great thing. Torrent system is an amazing one. The people who complain are the same who bitch about SVN’s and zip files because they are just so stupid. If you read this just know you are doing a good thing for all of us here who aren’t bothered by it so we don’t bother posting. Yet again its great.
AMG NOOOOO NOW ALL THE DUMB PEOPLE WILL BE FILTERED FROM GARRY’S MOD!!!11oneone
Wait, yay.
Cheers to you Garry and cheers to Ahri too. I was going to do the same but your levelheadedness has placated me.
I’d download maps by carrier pigeon if I had to but torrents are much nicer.
damm now i can’t get my cup of coffie anymore wile its downloading stuff from gmod.org, Its To fast Make it slower PLZZZZZ D: D: !!!!
Blizzard distributes WoW like this, because it makes sense. Keep up the good work, and ignore all of the idiots who fear technology.
I am The (“did you make rp downtown”) Pro and I approve of this choice.
“Can’t”/Don’t want to use torrents = Sucks for you.
fonix232, where are you getting these numbers from which you draw your conclusion that “almost half” of the gmod community can’t download now?
I would guess that you are amongst a small minority of the gmod community.
And I would guess that you are ALSO just guessing… so lets all pull numbers out of our asses and pretend that 92% of all statistics AREN’T made up on the spot.
IMHO, a lot of people think that mingebag 9-12 year olds make up a larger portion of the gmod community than in reality. I would guess that your average gmod enthusiast ranks a decent bit above your average computer user as far as internet knowledge goes… and thus your average gmod enthusiast shouldn’t have ANY issues with torrents.
Good job, Garry! I think this will benefit the gmod community in more than one way… both faster downloads from garrysmod.org AND now we might see a reduction in the number of mingebags online ’cause they won’t be able to figure out how to get their addons anymore.
I’m not afraid of torrents, I love torrents. They are so easy to use, however, my computer stopped accepting them randomly a while ago. :/
I don’t like torrents. The old way was so easy, even if it took five more seconds than a torrent.
One problem with torrents is that some ISPs will warn you for even using torrents or sometimes ban you from the network. Universities and other wi-fi operators for example.
Hi guys,
Just to let you know: I’ve send Garry an email telling him I’m willing to mirror all files. Only problem is that he didn’t reply yet..
The server would have a 100 MBit connection, 99% dedicated to garrysmod.org downloads.
Does any of you have closer contact with Garry? Can you ask him to send me a reply?
With kind regards,
MG
Comment 100 beat me to it.
@fonix232
Your port is blocked?
Then switch to another port?
This is a setting inside the Torrent application of your choice, some apps, like µtorrent even has port forwarding via upnp built in.
Try it, also, do you have a router in between or are you directly connected to the modem?
I’ve never heard of ANY software that can make a window popup and say that your ISP is blocking it, never, they just say that the port isn’t open.
Unless you have a program on your computer from you ISP, that you must have to be able to connect to the internet or something, but then again, you must be stuoid getting an ISP like that.
Cheers, hope you can sort it out
Whole team is BABY!
@132 You shouldn’t be downloading/playing Gmod at uni anyway you dumb shit
THis is a great idea you got garry – Torrents are great very fast for me. 8 kbs with the old DL way but now with the torrents on this im getting 800+kbs and that means more time to play Gmod.
Damn, people can whine.
I’ve been downloading things so much quicker now. I would recommend you download using opera 10.00 because of the inbuilt torrent application.
People should be thankful to even have Garry’s mod.org
Besides, who hasn’t used torrents for porn? C’mon…
In reply to comment 123, I personally am comfortable with SVN repositories and many forms of file compression, in fact I even host an SVN repository containing a number of visual studio projects. However not all the disadvantages of torrents come in the form of a steep learning curve or ISPs traffic shaping. As I have detailed in my earlier comment my complaint is with the privacy aspects of torrents. They can be tracked by seeders and dedicated tracking sites to find the IP of any PC in the swarm. There are no current ways around this as aubvious fixes like proxies and tor will not work with torrents due to the vast number of simultaneous conncetions. In light of this I hope you understand that though many of the arguments against torrents are invalid there is a minoroty of privacy nuts like myself who have a valid argument against them.
This is not to say I do not appreciate any centralised mod listing but it is not fair to force people to use torrents.
It works great, don’t mind the retarded fucknuts.
However, there is some a few pretty basic things you can do to make downloading easier for novice and scared users. Full blown idiots will still be idiots however.
Keep one button for downloading the .torrent-file and one or two alternatives for users that does not want a bittorrent client.
1. BitLet – http://www.bitlet.org/
This is a obvious alternative. All the user need is Java and a bittorrent client will run in the browser with no installation at all!
2. BitTorrent DNA – http://www.bittorrent.com/dna
Can automatically create a dynamic downloader for the file requested. As a bonus it will keep seeding it for a while if the user still got the file and only at a speed that does not slow the users connection down. You need to download a small .exe instead of a .torrent though.
Bear in mind that people will set their upload speed limit to 1 kb/s.
I don’t see why a lot of people are whining about this, as you said Garry, it is just an extra step.
The chance a torrent from garrysmod.org contains a virus is as big as the chance a .zip/.rar file contains a virus, because it is the same file. A torrent only contains the tracker and the information about the file…
I guess a lot of the people that play gmod buy every single game in the store and never download anything illegal.
Torrents are a great idea, much faster, and if servers are uploading them then files won’t die. The only problem i can imagine is that in some places, like on a college campus, they limit your uploads, so for people in that situation torrents could be a pain in the arse. Other than that though, it’s a great idea, screw all the idiots who can’t figure it out.
@145
Yeah but how many people are gonna sift thru the seeders of said torrent and single out your IP address? I don’t think there’s any way they could even tie the “random numbers” they find in a list of all seeding IPs to you or your name… the only think I could see happening is that someone arbitrarily picks an IP out of the list and attempts to hack into it… in which case I would hope that since you’re such a “security freak” that you’ve got all your bases covered and it would be a moot point.
I’ve had crap speeds with torrents and still do, but that’s my fault.
I like the new torrents, Gmod.org was extremely slow before, but having to open up Utorrent and downloading slowely for any file over 1mb is a pain.
Couldn’t the 1mb be changed to 5mb?
I love torrents, they’re lightning fast for me. Now what you have to do: MAKE FP NOT SO DAMN SLOW!
Wow, this is like hella fast now, what would take an hour before is like ten minutes now.
I’m not personally against torrents, but my college is. I’ve looked into different ways of getting around it, but the files just won’t download, and I’d rather not tussle with the network admins to get around the block. I’m not really miffed about using torrents, it’s just that I don’t have many options in actually getting the files. The solution that I would prefer is raising the minimum file size. Of course, it’s ultimately your choice.
Thanks for a great mod. Torrents or no, I’ll still enjoy Gmod and find a way to get new addons.
I have been very disapointed with BitTorrent, when using it, so far I have had to go through a few windows blue screens and 3 crash dumps. It sucks. Not the decision, just the fact that my computer doesn’t like BitTorrent. So far it seems unreliable.
I think torrents are a great idea and if everyone seeds a little of what they download it would make everything even better! :)
Torrents are awesome. Make this permanent please.
The noobs can just GTFO, they arent welcome on gmod.
Torrents are good, If anything it’ll stop mingebags getting mods to crash servers.
Good work Garry.
I personally thought this was a great idea since you will not have to worry about seeds, as that is handles by amazon cloud…which in theory should make the download speed ridiculously quick.
@ rejections to torrents:
I don’t understand why people are being such MingeBags as saying that torrents aren’t good and aren’t secure and BLAH BLAH BLAH. Learn to internet you idiots. Torrents are more secure than sites that claim your anonymous(IE 4 Chan, Warez sites).
Its called change people. Live with it or go die.
I think the educated here will agree, garrysmod.org needs to stay like this(because its awesome XD ).
Yay torrents :D! + for “torrent haters” FUCKING LEARN THAT TORRENT != WAREZ -.-. Also fucking learn to use them. I bet 90% of torrent haters are just DUMB KIDS. Like files wont be seeded.. garry said MULTIPLE TIMES that it is uploaded and servers seed it. So you WONT GET FUCKING SLOW KB/S. Also garry WONT delete file description (for no SVN quote). You will STILL be able to use SVN.
I’ve been slightly surprised by some of the posts here and on the forums. I don’t think users should be making people who are afraid of torrents or don’t understand how to use them feel they’re regarded with contempt. In my opinion it would be a good idea to help the more fearful users to feel comfortable with this method, after all it may become permanent.
why even have gmod.org its a wast of your money people only use it to put their advanced dups and honestly they can put those files somewhere else…why not have them upload it to somewhere like filefront or gamershell where ever and send the link in to you those downloads have options of where the person download them from.and best thing for you no more spending money for the download servers…since tahts what your cokmplaining about and everyone is complaining about speed personally i never used garrysmod for anythign but maps was slow yea but i didnt give a hoot.
I use Opera 10, so I didn’t even notice it switched to the use of torrents, but what I did notice was that instead of downloading extremely slow, it was downloading at like 1.9 MB/s.
The move to torrents was a definite improvement in my opinion.
Well. I have come accross 1 problem, if you own a server box and want to quickly download maps and stuff to the server we cant now because we dont want to download Utorrent onto the server boxes.
I don’t really like it. I torrent shit all the damn time, and frankly I don’t have that much of a problem with it; but this doesn’t mean I don’t have any problems. I hate having to download the torrent and then loading up Vuze. I just want to download a .zip file. If I have to torrent every single thing I download, I’d rather get it from a mirror in a nice .zip file than through the extra torrent step.
I personally have no problem with torrents, but your description of how the previous system work interested me. Coblitz may be slow, but it’s also free. Why not put the option to download directly back in, but only use that free service. It’ll be slower to use, yes, but the option of choice should really help all the grumblings.
These people are fucking retards Garry. Use torrents to weed out the idiots so you’ll have less hassle in the future. If people can’t work out how to install a torrent program, differentiate between legal and illegal torrents and configure a router, then they need their keyboard removed.
Slow? I’m downloading faster than with HTTP.
Viva la Revolucion!
Using torrent is a great idea but i live in Iceland so i only get about 30kb/s speed but its better than getting 5kb/s with the old system
Wow. I’m getting annoyed by how everyone who is completely in love with this torrent idea is going out and calling everyone else “faggots,” telling them to “kill themselves,” thinking they’re inexperienced mingebags. Just because you use a torrent program to download porn doesn’t make you the top of the world. Show some general decency, if you have any.
It takes 4 hours for 1 thing to download in torrents and for normally about 1-3min. maybe you should make them optional.
it about .3-.6 kb and im not lying
Seriousy, what the fuck.
I am downloading EVERYTHING at my max. download speed, which is 850 kiloBYTES per second, that is 6,640625mbit/s.
I don’t get what those fuckfaces don’t like. It’s much better than 20 kB/s crap which was before.
P.S.: direct downloads have EQUALLY SAME risks of having trojans/viruses as torrents.
If they aren’t capable of handling bittorrent, they’re to stupid to play garrysmod anyway. Bittorrent will make it faster, thx Garry!
Good idea, you lose less money, and we get faster speeds.
The only bad point is having to open the downloads in a torrent program.
People are just scared of using torrents. Hardly likely you’re going to get a virus from gmod.org.
At first the download speed was going at 12 kb/s a second and I was like “Oh god no”
Then it went up to 300. Thanks Garry.
This is great, makes it able to share files and makes it possible to keep content alive. :)
I was just testing this, and the speeds are great. This is without a doubt a GREAT change, to the better!
FUCK SAKES THE OTHER DOWNLOADS WERE TONS FASTER I HATE USING TORRENTS, ESPECIALY FOR FUCKING ADDONS OMFG… People don’t even bother seeding..
Thanks a lot butthole garry you fart knocker jew licker. We all payed fucking $10 for your shitty GMOD and you made like 5 mill+ off all of use and your bitchin about $200 a month bandwith bills so you fuck everything up. Thanks a lot asshole
I CANNOT DOWNLOAD NORMALLY FROM garrysmod.org ONLY BY THE TORRENTS BECAUSE i dont know why this happens HELP ME!!!!
ok problem is over i just need 2 wait 2 min and the URL will change to something.s3.blahblahblah.wxyz.com
the i remove something. and leave s3.blahblahblah.wxyz.com
Most the points have been talked about in the many posts. Still the number 1 issue is that some ISP and complex providers will block torrents. Yes all the network educated people, you can change the ports and everything on your side, however if you are on a university campus, or just live in an apartment that manages a single connection divided to the complex, they set the in and out ports and speeds. They will detect multiple connections centered to a single location.
I work for my apartment complex, we run software that does this very easy, we don’t block the connections, just limit them all to equal a normal connection as if it was one single connection point in.
Just want to point out as well, if you don’t live in a Major city, there is a good chance you only have one ISP available as they will assume ownership of an area and keep others out by making agreements to not enter another location. Evil business practices, yes, but it exists. You don’t always have that option and if you think about it, those are the ones that will be the biggest dicks and limit.
oh look torrents
im going to seed the shit out of files i download
I like this. I get much better speeds now, and I seed when I’m done downloading. People can just put up mirrors to other sites for direct downloads.
PHAH. What idiots. How do you manage to get those comments, Garry? I bet the only reason they compare them to illeagle downloads is becuase they get illeagle downloads themselves. This is nice that you’re going for the Torrent movement. You’re using it for how it should be used. And please, dump colbiltz. Absolutely retarded, and it’s fairly easy to circumnavigate them.
Why would you put it on a pirating site? Doesn’t that like.. influence MORE damn pirates on our steam games? Sadface.
Garry, THANK YOU.
@194: Would you please go and look up “BitTorrent” on Wikipedia?
@other comments: Some people (like me) just can’t switch ISPs because of parents, long-lasting contracts and the lack of other ISPs in their area (for me it’s the former two). I, for one, love this change, I reach fullspeed in about a minute downloading with BitTornado. Can’t say the same about µTorrent, torrents often take a long time to start with this for some reason.
So Gayry, i heard you like girls with dongs?
I find it funny that a large majority of people think using torrents is illegal and will make you a pirate.
For ALL you assholes out there whining about how you can’t change ISP and shit! My ISP blocked ThePirateBay.org, so i couldn’t go there, yet i can do this now. Without the change of ISP. How? OpenDNS.
Windows XP: https://www.opendns.com/start/device/windows-xp
Windows Vista: https://www.opendns.com/start/device/windows-vista
OSX Leopard: https://www.opendns.com/start/device/apple-osx-leopard
Ubuntu: https://www.opendns.com/start/device/ubuntu
Other: https://www.opendns.com/start/computer/
Now STOP whining about it, and just DO IT!
@199: Ya, I bet a large majority of them have downloaded GMod in that way.
great: my coputer is having trouble with bitorrent. On the bright side, if i can get them to work, i like them! So wonderfully fast!
I love torrent. I think it’s possibly the best thing to have happend since WW2.
Keep it. It’s fucking great.
The best part about this is that the guy who created BitTorrent was hired by Valve in 2004 to work on Steam’s distributed content publishing model. Anyone who got GMod uses Steam, which benefits from torrent-like technology.
1.75MB File, downloaded in <1 minute. Average download speed was 49.8 KB/s, with only 1 seed (Amazon).
No reason not to keep it, and uTorrent is easy to manage.
The majority of people who support torrents here seem to support them because they are more difficult than HTTP downloads and they will keep inexperienced users from downloading addons.
By that logic, I can compile a modify, configure and compile a Linux kernel from raw source code. Not many “noobs” can do that with no help or documentation, in fact I’d be surprised if anyone here could do it. Should that be a pre-requisite for downloading Gmod?
No, stop being elitist assholes, not everyone can use torrents and half the time it is beyond their control. I have no trouble with them, but HTTP was faster for me. See comment 106.
I’m for torrents! :p
It’s just like you said pretty much. People are idiots.
I wouldn’t give two shits about them though.
This wasn’t the best idea because some isps block p2p transfers like torrents and some can even cancel your service if you use torrents (from what iv heard)
If your ISP Blocks you it’s because they’re paranoid, they will always inform you and all you have to do is prove you’re not illegally dl’ing Games or Movies.
And for the naabs torrenting in school/uni:
I mean it’s great to get ahead on your addon collection during school, but if it’s not working, get over it and learn lol
Garry, you are amazing. Lots of people are bitching about it, but it works amazingly fast. I downloaded kermites weapon pack before torrents, and it took 30 minutes. Now, it took 3 minutes. THANKS!
Oh, and people that bitch about it should actually try before saying it sucks.
Hi! I was surfing and found your blog post… nice! I love your blog. :) Cheers! Sandra. R.
Lol, most of the people who are torrent haters cant spell.
Anyways, these torrents are fine, and bittorrent or (I dont know if it has fancy characters in it so im spelling it this way) Utorrent, does not give you viruses. If you get bad shit on your computer it is because you did not download from a secure site, or you decided to download something that had a virus/trojan in it. And if torrents don’t work for you, its not Garry’s fault, its yours for not making sure your computer system is actually stable. Though I do have to admit, it is kind of annoying that you need to take that extra step to go to bittorrent (or whatever you use) and then open the folder the archive is in, and then open it.
And btw, it is very, very, VERY! unlikely that you will get caught downloading something illegal or legal, so don’t freak out that your downloading something illegal, there are hundreds of thousands of people that are using a torrent too, and any law enforcement people cant possibly monitor all traffic on the internet.
Thanks Garry, those comments definitly made my day.
They were priceless.
People are stupid, there’s nothing we can do about it.
The only actual problem with torrents would be some ISP block bt traffic, but then again, you might be a able to make your own custom bittorrent client like Blizzard does, that allows HTTP transfer from amazon and p2p from others.
But yea, this is the only reason I have any respect for Blizzard. I love how they use bittorrent to boost speed on their downloads. Valve definitly needs to do that because they get huge slowdowns when a big updates like tf2 get launched.
Anyways, try not getting too angry at people ;)
So garry, we’ve got seedboxes setup running TorrentFlux etc all over the place.
When will you create us an RSS feed of the most popular torrents so we can update our torrents accordingly?
Loving the Torrent idea.
Well, coblitz sucks balls in my region, but then again torrents are the way to go.
“Here’s some quotes:
‘BAWWWWWW’
…
‘BAAAAWW’
…
(Repeat ad nauseum)
Oh boy.”
You should link people to uTorrent instead of BitTorrent. uTorrent is way more lightweight so people won’t be as annoyed to download it to download from garrysmod.org.
I liked the torrents, and seeding it on weekdays is fine with me, I usually don’t play on weekdays so I just torrent the torrents I downloaded. Although, I do have a friend that think that all torrents are virus and ask me to upload the zip files to filefront, I wish there was a way to convince people there are no virus in torrents and I told him to use uTorrent, but he denied it and said “ITS A VIRUS!”
The torrents work fine for me, and its more faster for me to use, unlike downloading it from coblitz server. Thanks Garry!
i personally like the torrent stuff but its not working i mean it says its downloading than nothing everything just stops did you change the bit-torrent?
cauz i just want to download stuff but i cant pleas fix it soon
Kick-ass! Torrents rock!
The biggest problem for torrent users who say they’re so slow, is that they don’t know how to use firewall. Almost always torrents are blocked by firewall and “*whinewhine* torrents suck. I liek rapidsharez and use iExplore.”
http://releases.ubuntu.com/9.04/ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent <– See? Even operating systems use torrents! I think the torrent idea was great Garry. good job!
I hate TORRENTS i had to wipe my entire computer because of this, THANKS!
I think it’s excellent. My speed went from between 5 and 100kb/s to about 800kb/s, so I’m not complaining. It might be a more viable solution for the tecnophobes if more browsers integrated BitTorrent (like Opera). I, personally, use uTorrent which is lightweight and virtually takes no time to load up – I don’t know why people seem to have such an aversion to it.
Great work, in my opinion!
Hahahaha
This made my day.
People are so cute, complaining and whining and bitching about what they don’t understand in the slightest.
Adorable.
can use bittorrent its not for window vista only windows 62
TORRENTS GARRY YOU BETTER TURN TORRENTS OFF OR I WILL NOT PLAY IT ANYMORE
Next you should claim it’s nuclear powered and make more people freak out because of a single word.
Yeah i download torrents a lot, its kinda fine but, is it normal that utorrent cant load faster that 40kb/s when its files from garrysmod.org? cause i dont know whats up with that, spent 5 hours loading kermite’s packs… so yeah.. any idea?
My problem with the new torrent system is that the our University IT Admins block torrents – There goes my Gmod experience :(
yeah i got bit torrent and it was working for a bit but injected my computer with TONS of malware and spyware, i’d really prefer some other application to be used which doesn’t use torrents cuz if i didn’t have anti virus software my computer would’ve been better in the trash
The problem isn’t with the torrents. Torrents are fast and would save you money on bandwidth. The problem is when you have moron network administrators that blacklist torrent packets.
Makes sense, right? Clearly torrents are only ever used for illegal activity! Morons.
Okay, I love this idea. I love it.
But there is one problem.
Seeds.
You can’t download a torrent if there are no seeders!
And its possible that there can be no seeders on every single torrent for mods for Gmod because they’re mods…
not the actual game itself.
other than the extra time spent opening my torrent program I had no problem with it. But the reactions of idiots all over about it was hilarious.
Ahem.
“Bear in mind that this is after I explained that FILES ARE SEEDED BY THE SERVERS!”
From what I've seen, I don't think you can just arbitrarily put “VIRASS” in files downloaded through torrent. People who write popular protocols aren't just random dumbasses off the street, these are people who have a pretty good idea of what they're doing. There's things in place to deal with this stuff.
What I think torrent does is it takes a checksum of the file from… somewhere (perhaps the .torrent file). I'm pretty sure that you can only contract a virus if you're downloading a file that originally had a virus in it- and it's impossible to get such things from Garrysmod.org (except Lua viruses, but those are a completely different ballpark, they can't affect your computer (okay, there was ONE that could, but the exploit it used was fixed)) because it doesn't allow binaries. You can't get viruses from data files, it is quite simply impossible (well, not completely, but the probability of someone figuring something like that out in Garrysmod is quite low, you need to find a special kind of glitch that tricks programs into loading data into executable memory, known as a “buffer overflow”, and I'm pretty sure DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is designed to… well… prevent that). If your virus checker detects a virus in a data file then:
1: It's wrong (it happens to computer programs too).
2: It might well be a piece of crap.
3: It might even be a virus itself.
As for torrent being illegal because people do illegal things with it… well… then computers, knives, oxygen (arson), tools, and hands are illegal too. As long as you don't download pirated stuff, you haven't downloaded pirated stuff.
It only works on windows 62? Gee, Microsoft must be lying about my operating system! (You might have been being sarcastic, but so am I so it's a complement in that case)
Also, windows 62? I'm pretty sure there's no windows 62…
but they showz it on teh tevees wit the seeesseye so it must be teh truz
yea i love torrents as they are almost always faster for me then normal downloading too
i wish tollornts would come back
Lol lies
hahah yea and ther are other thing like Oh limewire that can open torrents
agreed i got way better speed then ever
