I got a list of shit in my head to sort out. Here’s some of it.

Acheivement Icons

The icons sometimes don’t load properly. I dunno exactly why. I think I might be calling the function to get them too early or some shit. They seem to pull down avatars and stuff instead. It works properly if I publish them from Steamworks.. but then they slowly fuck up again. I’m gonna have a mess with it. Seems like it would be a Valve problem, but at the same time it seems like they would have noticed if it was happening in their code aswell.

GMod Engine Version

GMod uses an older engine than every other Source game. I dunno why this is. I think Valve are scared of breaking GMod with TF2 updates. Which is fair enough I guess. Anyway, this has left all GMod servers exposed to all the exploits that they fixed earlier this week. I emailed them and they’re looking into a way to balance between being up to date and not fucking up. They know this shit better than me.

We’ve been kicking the idea of converting garrysmod.com’s news system over to a wordpress system.. which would allow for comments and stuff. The old system was useful when it was jut me approving new, but now we’ve got a real dedicated team of news posters it makes sense to go with something a bit better. I know people will bitch about this idea, saying oh no, fucking comment spam yadda yadda. But sharrap and get over it.

I regularly get emails saying that the speed on garrysmod.org is shit. And that’s true. But that’s because it’s using a free mirroring service. I’d like to make some kind of mirroring script, so people that want to help mirror files can, easily. But to be honest I can’t really be bothered to do this. Anyone want to help set this up? Anyone good? Better than me? For cash?

What about File sharing for the garrysmod.org files. All the uploads are simply torrent files and anyone who wants something adds it to their client and gets the file. It would also mean that shittier mods etc. will be lost through lack of seeders and the better ones won’t be lost because people will want to let others get them.

Mirroring wouldn’t be too difficult to do, and you could easily make it so that people could offer their own servers as voluntary mirrors (of course there will be verification and reporting)

garry, you say the achievement icons are your fault, but I’ve seen this problem in other Steam games. This happens in Multiwinia and I’m pretty sure it used to happen in TF2 (or was it Steam Community’s Achievement popup?). In exactly the same way too. I haven’t seen it for long time in TF2 so Valve must have changed something. Try asking them about that too.

Well I can’t say I would do it for free, seeing as I am POOR AS HELL( lol ). Anyways, money would give more motivation to do the work. You also gotta make sure this person is legit, and not some guy that is going to dep out on you. Also, I think a GMod dot org team would be better than just one guy.

Is there any reason you haven’t been given the source code since you’re almost equal to a commercial developer using the Source engine? It’s not as if you’re a normal user with the SDK.

Garry, I think the achievement bug is Steam. Although I’m not 100% sure, but have a look at these images:

There you can see the “Head of class” achievement has the icon of an Autobot from Transformers. However here:

The icon is obviously not the same, at all. This happens rarely, but I think steam is the one that’s fucked not your stuff.

Hey Garry cant you just use Filefront to Host Mirrors for every Old files thats about 300 days old then mirror the new ones? I mean with a script other wise pain in the ass, Or you could just get File front to somehow “lend” you speed if thats even possible. If your best go with filefront doesn’t work you could just force people to Svn stuff which would Take the Bandwith of google And all those Trunk websites

As Wickedgenius said, you should find a way to set an automatic webservice that build a .torrent file for every uploaded file on garrysmod.org.
Than you have to make a choice.
Setup a private tracker for everything or use one or more of publics.

Torrents can be a bad idea, What if none “seeds” the file then the file is lost if you can get a server to auto seed that would work, But then you have the problems with clients not being able to download because the ports are not correct or the ISP block bittorrent (Some do)

Just because a DL uses a torrent does not mean it is pirated software. Plenty game company’s use torrent to put out demo’s and such.

I love the idea of the miroring system, also you could host file links and svn info on the site, it is a bit outdated. Sometimes i see downloads from 4years ago filling the front page, garry model an such
Garry does have the source code to the engine but i do not think he can change it for the most part.
WordPress for garrysmod.com would rock, you could so a soft switch, give a wordpress engine but keep the normal front end, also for the love of god please add a wysiwyg editor to the post making.
the new loading screen rcoks, i am thinking the first part is doing client side interface start for lua since it is done using lua. though saying that with this new hock people can crash gmod without even starting it by making a trojin version of say wiremod.

It’s not that he is using the outdated version of the source engine, or doesn’t have the code. When Valve patches their games, it’s only for their games. They don’t update Garry’s Mod since they don’t develop it. So Garry would have to fix the exploits himself or ask Valve what they did.

FYI: As of the update, saving is completely broken for a large number of people. As in, any attempt to save the game (menu, quicksave, autosave) will instantly crash GM.

About the achievements problem, well every time Valve updates they games something with, Garry’s Mod goes wrong — and has to be fixed. About garrysmod.org, well I have noticed that you have and early version of Windows Internet Explorer, so from now I advise you to use, Windows Internet Explorer 8.
